The recent budget cuts to Pima County JTED satellite funding for the 2016-2017 school year have many of our business partners, community members, parents, students, and the families of future students concerned.
Here are a few things you need to know:
- Arizona's budget permanently cuts the funding mechanism for JTEDs, which was overwhelming supported by voters living in more than 100 school districts across the state.
- Satellite programs, which serve 90% of JTED/CTE students in Arizona, will lose 50% of their funding starting in the 2016-2017 school year.
- More than 90,000 students are enrolled in JTED/CTE programs in Arizona, with approximately 15,000 in Pima County, Rio Rico, and San Manuel.
- Arizona's JTEDs have not received 100% of their funding since 2008.
More information is included on the JTED homepage and in the following opinions and editorials:

Precision Manufacturing Works
For Local Business, Industry
| |
Pima County JTED students in the Precision Manufacturing program at Desert View High school in Sunnyside School District are reaching out to local business and and finding internships and jobs.
The program's instructor, Cesar Gutierrez, and the Director of Sunnyside CTE, Kathy Prather, said that the program has 20 local manufacturing companies seeking students from the program to place into internships and directly into employment.
Ernesto Moreno is one such student who is currently working at Abrams Airborne Manufacturing, Inc. while attending Desert View. Mr. Moreno recently designed a bolt which he successfully engineered to retrofit a larger part already in production.
"Without the help of the JTED program I wouldn't be able to go to school," Moreno said. "I've become certified in machining and drafting, so now I'm more valuable to industry than some of the students just coming out of college who have never been in a hands on environment.
Gary Abrams, president of Abrams Airborne Manufacturing, Inc. finds the partnership mutually beneficial. He wrote, "This type of education and training is needed to support manufacturing employers in their efforts to grow through a skilled qualified workforce." He recently thanked Mr. Gutierrez for supplying his company with quality employees.
Some of the other members of the Southern Arizona Manufacturers Partnership seeking JTED students through the program at Desert View are Raytheon, and Industrial Tool Die Engineering.
