CTE/JTED Makes the M-List

The Precision Manufacturing program at Desert View High School has been added to the Manufacturing Institute's prestigious M-List.

Thanks to the attention to detail of Kathy Prather, Director of CTE/JTED at Sunnyside Unified School District, and instructor Cesar Gutierrez, Desert View's program has been recognized for teaching valuable workplace skills.

According to the Manufacturing Institute, "The M-List recognizes high schools, community colleges, technical schools, and universities that are teaching manufacturing students to industry standards."

Desert View's CTE/JTED Precision Manufacturing program is one of only two in the state recognized with this honor. The other Arizona honoree is Maricopa Community College.

JTED bioscience instructor wins Celebration of Innovation Award

The Arizona Technology Council (AZTC) honored Pueblo Magnet High School bioscience instructor Dr. Andrew Lettes as Teacher of the Year at the Governor's Celebration of Innovation gala in November.

The annual award gala is sponsored and organized by AZTC and the Arizona Commerce Authority.
Lettes' award includes a $1,500 cash prize.

"This is a great honor," Lettes said. "I have worked really hard starting the biotech program, and am really pleased."

Lettes was recognized for his engaging curriculum in his CTE/JTED courses, and the Biotech Pipeline project that seeks to connect students with industry. "Until four years ago I had just one science fair student," Lettes said. "Last year we had over 20 students participating."

JTED Bioscience Instructor Named Ambassador for Excellence

Pima County JTED bioscience instructor Kevin Kehl at Andrada Polytechnic High School in Vail School District was one of five teachers nominated for Arizona Education Foundation (AEF) Teacher of the Year.

As a top finalist, Kehl will spend this year promoting education and sharing best teaching practices as an Ambassador for Excellence.

"Kevin is justifiably highly respected for his expertise," said Calvin Baker, Vail Unified School District Superintendent. "That expertise is grounded in his authenticity."

Kehl is the head of Andrada Polytechnic High School's Bioscience Pathway, a program that received a $5,000 grant from the Research Corporation for Science last spring, so that the school could add animal cell culture to the bioscience curriculum.

Culinary Students Gain Real-World Experience in Community Outreach

Pima County JTED Culinary Arts students at Santa Rita are no strangers to community events these days, and November has been a busy month.

Students represented JTED at the Tucson Village Farm Harvest Festival at Rillito River Park, selling tamales and pumpkin rolls on November 15.

On November 16, the group sold food side-by-side with vendors from local restaurants such as Vivace, at the Viva La Local Food Festival at Rillito Downs.

These events provide opportunities for students to test the skills they've learned while in the JTED kitchen in a real-world scenario with on-site food prep and transport similar to a catering or food truck situation.

Culinary Arts instructor Becky Yim said the events have resulted in students being approached with job offers.
