JTED Engineering students and teachers come out winners

Ann Marie Condes' JTED Engineering students at Palo Verde Magnet High School are gearing up for the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) in Phoenix, March 20-22.

Two teams from Palo Verde, comprising 50 students, will compete in the FRC and VEX robotics competitions. The FRC contest requires students to build a robot from scratch to play Aerial Assist on a full-size court with other robots. The VEX team of freshman worked on a smaller robot and game to compete at the state level last weekend.

"We're taking what we're learning and bringing it to life," says Senior Victoria Miller (Center of photo). "We made it happen and that's really awesome for your self esteem. It makes me think I can do anything I put my mind to."

Inspiring students such as Miller earned Condes the 2014 Southern Arizona Educator of the Year Award. She received the honor last month from the Southern Arizonan Engineers, who cited her outstanding contributions to the field of engineering education, and her success at mentoring young engineers.

Desert View students design their own success with SolidWorks
SolidWorks 3-D Modeling

Desert View High School drafting teacher Cesar Gutierrez isn't just preparing his JTED students for jobs in the real world, he's working to make sure they stand out as employers' top choices to hire.

Recently, eight of Gutierrez' students earned their SolidWorks CSWA Certification (Certified SolidWorks Associate). SolidWorks is a 3-D mechanical computer-aided drafting program (CAD). It's used by approximately 80 percent of the manufacturing industry to design everything from automotive parts and toys, to advanced medical equipment and weaponry for the Department of Defense. The CSWA students are:

  • Desarae Stephens
  • Jess Quintero
  • Clarissa Moreno
  • Evelyn Plascencia
  • Esperanza Celis
  • Arturo Escudero
  • Robert Canales
  • Johnatton Ayala

The certification exam requires students to demonstrate their expertise with SolidWorks 3-D solid modeling, design concepts and sustainable design protocols. "When I passed it I was ecstatic," says Stephens. "Because, now I know I can do it."

Gutierrez says JTED funding for programs like SolidWorks is essential in producing well-rounded students who understand theory and the practical applications of what they're learning. He encourages his students to continue earning advanced accreditation, including the Certified SolidWorks Expert (CSWE) certification - an elite achievement held by a select few students worldwide.

"There are only three or four students in the world who have their CSWE," claims Gutierrez. "Our goal is to have our students do the same."

JTED Film/TV students attract the pros

Two JTED student interns from Desert View High School recently began working with the Major League Soccer broadcast crew streaming live preseason matches at Tucson's Kino Sports Complex.

IX Mendoza's Film/TV students Nicole Robles and Carlos Padilla join the pros to help with the broadcasts on MLSSoccer.com

"We looked into whether we would invest in that ourselves or not," says Greg Foster, FC Tucson co-managing partner. "Along the way we discovered that the Sunnyside district has a really robust live streaming program that includes high quality equipment and well-trained students who are looking for an opportunity to get out into the market."

A Mammoth win at SkillsUSA Competition

For their first SkillsUSA Region 6 Construction event ever, and being the smallest school represented, Gary Faulkenberry's JTED students are building quite a name for themselves by nailing a gold medal in the regional carpentry division.

San Manuel High School juniors Andres Rodriguez (Left) and Jacob Gonzales took 1st place in the two-person team competition against 14 other larger schools recently.

"I was surprised," says Rodriguez. "It was really fun."

Classmates Francisco Barragan and Mathew Encinas also competed and finished in 5th place. Not bad, considering they only have one semester of Construction under their tool belts.

JTED students open a new chapter of National Technical Honor Society

Pima County JTED will induct its first group of 24 students into the National Technical Honor Society tomorrow evening. The students, representing 11 high schools and home schooling, are enrolled in programs including Multimedia, Certified Nursing Assistant, Cosmetology, and Medical Assistant.
  • Wednesday, March 5
  • 5:30 p.m.
  • JTED @ Santa Rita Conference Center (3951 S. Pantano Rd.)
