Where is all of the solder mask going?
Yearly at Taiyo we gather market information from solder mask to HDI material usage. We look at the number of kgs that are sold all over the world. As we all know, PCB manufacturing is shifting to China but did you ever imagine how much? Most of the IPC data that is published is based on the monetary value of PCBs, so the shift is not nearly as bad as opposed to the usage. This is due to the fact that the Americas and Europe are still producing high value PCBs.
The good news is that the amount of solder mask used globally has increased by 50% since 2006, an annual growth rate of 5.2%!
At Taiyo we gather the amount of kgs being used in PCB manufacturing and the numbers are quite telling. First of all, the amount of solder mask being used globally from 2006 to 2014 has increased by 50%.
The amount of solder mask used in China measured on a global basis has gone from 47% to 73%. Thus, nearly 3 out of every 4 kgs of solder mask being produced in the world today are used in China. For the Americas the amount has decreased in 2006 from 3% in of the global share to just 1% in 2014. Also, Europe has fallen from 6% to 1.5% in the same time frame. This is fantastic news for China, but what does it mean for the Americas and Europe?
The Americas need to continue to be on the cutting edge of technology.
I think this just emphasizes that the Americas and Europe need to continue to be on the cutting edge with new technology and newer materials. At Taiyo America we continue to see an increase in higher technology materials like LDI, LED white, via fill and ink jet legend. So the take away here is that the Western companies have to stay their course in leading the world by continuing to be the high tech innovators of the circuit board world.

Amsterdam and the EIPC Summer Conference
A visit to Amsterdam usually means a visit to an equipment manufacturer, and this trip was no different, however,
I quickly learned upon arrival that "summer" in Amsterdam can be very unpredictable. Continued...
