This month's ART21 films have been reflecting on the past, in both historical and more personal, immediate ways. Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Gordon looked back on old portfolios in a New York Close Up episode, and a new ART21 Exclusive captured Carrie Mae Weems' powerful performance, Grace Notes, commemorating the tragic deaths of young black men. In a new preview of Art in the Twenty-First Century Season Eight, Stan Douglas describes the making of his 2008 photograph Abbott & Cordova, 7 August 1971--a careful restaging of the 1971 Gastown riots in Vancouver.
Whether personal or political, contemporary art's engagement with the past is crucial for its role as reflection, commentary, and critique.
