New Videos from Exclusive and New York Close Up |
| | Glenn Ligon: Layers of Meaning
From the Exclusive series
Glenn Ligon discusses texts and cultural events, such as the writings of James Baldwin and the Million Man March, which inspired some of his paintings. |
| | Gabriel Orozco: Mirror Crit From the Exclusive series
Gabriel Orozco conducts a "Mirror Crit," in which he presents a student's artwork as if it is his own. Orozco speaks without having previous knowledge of the student's background or intentions, allowing the images to, in a sense, speak for themselves. |

Highlights from the Art21 Magazine |
In April and May, the Art21 Magazine is all about "Value." Articles published this month include:
- a special playlist from artist Pinar Yolacan, in which she juxtaposes funk carioca and Turkish percussion with Afrobeat and R&B.
The "Value" issue continues through May 31, 2014.
Writer-in-Residence
Boston-based writer Elizabeth Devlin is the "Value" issue writer-in-residence. In her first piece, "Read Between the One-Liners," she profiles Boston artist Pat Falco whose text-based works made their museum debut in the 2013 deCordova Biennial.
In residence through the end of May, Devlin will continue to "examine the market-driven forces behind contemporary art appraisal, as well as the intangible, mutable, and subjective nature of worth."Top: Kota Ezawa. Art21 Educators at the Guggenheim |
Seeing the work of Carrie Mae Weems with fresh eyes and new lenses
Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video--on view at the Guggenheim Museum through May 14, 2014--provides an opportunity to survey Weems's rich body of work, images cohered by timeless and timely themes: beauty, equality, race, gender, and power, among others.
On April 5, the Guggenheim and Art21 brought together twenty educators to explore Weems's work using a variety of interpretive lenses, discussing how and why a work of art can move us to new ways of thinking and understanding, and the power of hearing the artist's voice.
