On October 1, we introduced the
Art21 Magazine, the result of a major redesign and rethinking of the Art21 BlogThe following week, we launched Artist to Artist, a new series of short-format documentaries featuring contemporary visual artists in conversation with their peers. Read on to learn more about the series and to watch the first three films.

Continuing the 100 Artists celebration, we also released a new video featuring David Altmejd and his head sculptures, a snappy Daniel Gordon GIF, and a previously unpublished interview with Kimsooja.

videoNew Artist to Artist Series
Art21's newest film series, Artist to Artistfeatures contemporary visual artists in conversation with their peers. Artist to Artist launched in October with a premiere edition of three films featuring art biennials in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; Venice, Italy; and Istanbul, Turkey. Artists Shahzia Sikander and Diana Al-Hadid guide viewers through these prestigious exhibitions. 


  Shahzia Sikander takes viewers on an enlightening journey through Sharjah Biennial 11, speaking with six fellow artists along the way.


  Brooklyn-based artist Diana Al-Hadid travels to the 55th Venice Biennale, where she tours the exhibition and speaks candidly with five of her peers about their work.

  Shahzia Sikander travels to the 13th Istanbul Biennial and speaks with four fellow artists and a two-person design collective about their projects. Artists also address the public protests in Gezi Park and Taksim Square.

On October 1, Art21 debuted the Art21 Magazine, the result of a major redesign and rethinking of the Art21 Blog. Available exclusively online, the Art21 Magazine publishes six times per year and each issue is devoted to a single theme.

The theme of the inaugural issue is "
Becoming an Artist," inspired by a quote from Art21's feature-length film William Kentridge: Anything is Possible.   

Highlights: Rachel Craft speaks with four full-time artists about their first jobs. Joy Garnett shares her thoughts on artists coming of age alongside the "vast digital library" amassed online. Erin Sweeny checks in with the social choreographer Ernesto Pujol. Jessica Hamlin calls for a revolution in K-12 education. And Cameron Shaw, who inaugurates our re-envisioned residency program, questions how one becomes anything

Host an Art21 Screening
During the 100 Artists campaign, we want our materials in the hands of as many arts organizations and institutions as possible, as well as devoted Art21 News readers and recipients.

Art21 Educators are spreading Oliver Herring's do-it-yourself project TASK across the country.

Inspired by Herring's participation in the Art21 Educators program and its annual Summer Institute, educators are employing the improvisational and participatory structure of TASK to engage students, teachers, administrators, and community members. From Seattle, Washington to Boyertown, PA, Murfreesboro, TN to Livermore, CA, Baltimore, MD to Chapel Hill, NC, participants of all ages are making art in collaborative, unpredictable, open-ended, and playful ways.

William Kentridge: Anything Is Possible
Art21's Peabody Award-winning feature film provides an in-depth portrait of South African artist William Kentridge as he creates a series of new works, including a staging of Shostakovich's The Nose at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. William Kentridge: Anything Is Possible is available on DVD from ShopPBS and other retailers.
