About the program:
New York is the second largest producer of apples in the U.S., and the growing popularity of hard cider is bringing new opportunities to orchards. In celebration of Cider Week NY, Food Day 2013, and the Big Apple Crunch campaign, this panel discussion will explore how hard cider production offers growers economic opportunities, revives "cider apple varieties," and brings new possibilities for sustainable practices. The apple is our iconic NY fruit and hard cider is giving it a brighter future, thanks in large part to the thirst of NYC.

This panel will be moderated by Sara Grady, Vice President of Programming at Glynwood and founder of the Apple Project and Cider Week, joined by four of the leading NY apple growers and craft cider producers:
  • Tim Dressel, Kettleborough Ciderhouse & Dressel Orchards
  • Elizabeth Ryan, Hudson Valley Farmhouse Cider & Breezy Hill Orchards
  • Autumn Stoscheck, Eve's Cidery (invited)
  • Dan Wilson, Slyboro Ciderhouse & Hicks Orchard
Consider volunteering at this event! It's a great way to get to know FSNYC and its members. Contact caitlin@foodsystemsnyc.org for info.

What are the food and nutrition education programs in that are going into public schools? How are these programs distributed across our city's schools? The report, to be released on Food Day on October 24th,  from the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy of the Program in Nutrition at Teachers College Columbia University.

FSNYC is proud to be partnering with  Grow NYC for the 2013 Big Apple Crunch. As part of Food Day on October 24th, the crunch is an attempt to set the record for "Most Participants in an Apple-Crunching Event."

At FSNYC's October Open Networking Meeting, we'll be "crunching" cider apple varieties. Join us! Or, join a crunch at one of Grow NYC's Greenmarkets! Or, host one yourself! To crunch on your own all you have to do is sign up and eat an apple. It's easier than apple pie!

Congress is poised to cut $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP (formerly known as the food stamp program). Congress' proposed cuts come on top of cuts to SNAP already slated to take effect on November 1st.

The New York City Food Forum, a gathering of food-active organizations that initially came together to organize the Mayoral Forum on the Future of Food in New York City, has partnered with the Hunger Cliff project a new national online and action resource where individuals and organizations are convening to speak out against cuts to SNAP.
