Investing Acres

The goal of the Invest An Acre program is to encourage farmers in the United States to donate a portion of their crop proceeds to help

fight hunger in their communities. 100% of every farmer's donation in North Dakota is routed to the Great Plains Food Bank or certified agency serving that farmer's community. In addition, for every $1 donated, Invest an Acre partners will match the donation. Together with Invest an Acre, Feeding America and the Great Plains Food Bank, we educate farmers, elevators, and rural communities across North Dakota and Clay County, MN about this program, encouraging and empowering participants to donate a portion of their crop proceeds to help fight hunger in their own communities. For more information, and to take part in this valuable program please contact Marcia Paulson.

Sparking Change at Walmart

Walmart stores across the nation, including the 15 in North Dakota and Clay County, MN, will kick off their Fight Hunger, Spark Change initiative on April 6, 2015.  With a campaign goal of 75 million meals donated, the event has three ways to give:

1. Buy a participating item and the equivalent of 1 meal will be donated to the Great Plains Food Bank.

2. Donate any amount at the register and the money will be given to the Great Plains Food Bank.

3. Share a picture on social media with up to six people committed to fight hunger. Use the campaign hashtag #WeSparkChange, and Walmart will make a $10 donation for each share.

Together we will end hunger in our communities!

March is National Nutrition Month

People struggling with hunger have limited resources to buy the nutritious foods that are critical to their overall health, growth and development. For those who struggle to afford or access nutritious foods, inexpensive and unhealthy foods are sometimes the only option. In addition to the same influences that have led to high obesity rates among the general population, low-income people are also faced with limited resources to buy nutritious foods that are often higher priced, the need to buy cheaper and less nutritious calorie dense foods in order to maximize caloric intake.

There are many nutrition assistance programs to help people in need bridge the gap between hunger and nutrition. Watch the video Illuminating Intersections: Hunger and Health, and join in the discussion at #hungerandhealth.
