WELCOME TO OUR NEW YEAR 2013 NEWSLETTER

TMC LogoHappy New Year and thanks to everyone for their support during 2012 making this our busiest and most successful year yet.

Another Himalayan season has come to an end and over the past three months we have organised our seventh expedition to Mera Peak (click here for this Trip report); seventh trek around Dhaulagiri Circuit (click here for this Trip report); fourth Lunana Snowman trek in Bhutan (click here for this Trip report) and countless treks to the Everest region including Everest Luxury Lodge, Luxury Everest Base Camp and Everest Base Camp treks.

We also helped to organise the second Everest Rocks event for musical cancer charity Love Hope Strength Foundation USA. This trek was a huge success with all twenty three people in this group successfully reaching Everest Base Camp on December 6th- take a look at Everest Rocks 2 website for video and photos of the trek and also the finale concert in Kathmandu.

Of course none of these trips would be possible without our amazing trek crews in Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan and India who once again performed a great job supporting our groups in these countries. Many thanks to everyone involved who helped make these trips such a success.

Our passion at The Mountain Company has always been exploring remote areas of Himalaya and to develop original itineraries. These days we are focusing on treks along The Great Himalaya Trail ("GHT") that visit remote areas with low trekker traffic. We are really excited to launch two new treks along GHT for Autumn 2013 season: Kanchenjunga to Makalu in Nepal and Rodung La with Merak Sakten in Bhutan.

The Mountain Company is an accredited GHT Alliance trek operator and we support the aims and objectives of this alliance. GHT Alliance is a group of like-minded individuals and organisations who voluntarily adopt a Code of Conduct as well as believing in the principles of Fair Trade throughout the Himalaya, for more information on GHT Alliance.

We have noticed over last five years or so the weather patterns seem to be changing in the Himalaya with often heavier and longer monsoons continuing into the month of October then often followed by sunny winter months with low amounts of precipitation. Winter is a wonderful time to visit Nepal and Bhutan, this is the best period to get clear views of the Himalaya and also there are far fewer other trekkers at this time of year.

Winter season would be too cold for high mountain expeditions (eg. Mera Peak) or crossing high passes (eg. Dhaulagiri Circuit). However if you are planning to visit the Everest region then it would be worth considering late November or December departures. There are also some superb treks at lower altitude to consider for Winter months such as our new Luxury Kathmandu Valley Rim.

Over the last two years we have been expanding our Cultural Tours program to Nepal and Bhutan. These trips are proving very popular for people who would like visit Nepal and Bhutan while staying in hotels every evening of their itinerary.

Please take a look at the column on the left of this newsletter for our portfolio of western led treks we plan to run throughout the year. As you can see we have another exciting and adventurous year lined up for 2013!

Please get in touch with us if you would like to discuss any of our treks, I will be in London for the next few months until mid-March so you can call/ Skype or email at any time. I am also available to meet in person if you can get to London.

Wishing you a very happy New Year from all of us at The Mountain Company. We look forward to you travelling with us in 2013!

PAKISTAN TREKS SUMMER 2013
We are organising three treks to Pakistan over the summer: in July Snow Lake and Hispar La; in August K2 Base Camp & Gondogoro La and in late August K2 Base Camp & Concordia.

The Mountain Company groups have visited Pakistan every year since 2004 and over this time we have built up unrivalled experience in operating in this amazing country.

So far we have received alot of interest for these departures, please get in touch soon if you would like to join one of these groups.

GHT TREKS IN BHUTAN
In Autumn 2013 we have two GHT treks in Bhutan, in late September Lunana Snowman and then in late October we are excited to organise Rodung La with Merak and Sakten for the first time. Rodung La trek will be led by our Bhutan specialist Almas Khan who also led our 2012 Snowman trek.

The Bhutanese government opened up Merak and Sakten in 2010 and so far very few trekking groups have visited this remote region in far eastern Bhutan. The Rodung La trail can be seen as an extension of Snowman trek and by doing both of these treks connects the country along GHT from west of the country near Paro to east in Trashi Yangtse.

GHT TREKS IN NEPAL
During 2013 we plan to run three GHT treks in Nepal starting in mid April with Makalu to Everest followed by Upper Dolpo to Jomsom in May. In Autumn season we have an epic trek from Kanchenjunga to Makalu.

Kanchenjunga to Makalu is a 36 day trek following the first section of GHT starting in the east of Nepal and travelling through a remote region on the border with Tibet. For those who do not have the time to complete this full traverse to Makalu BC we have a shorter trek at 24 days exiting directly to Tumlingtar airstrip.

CULTURAL TOURS IN NEPAL AND BHUTAN
Over the last two years we have been expanding our Cultural Tours program in Nepal and Bhutan. These trips are proving very popular for people who would like visit these countries while staying in hotels on a tour. You have the choice to either join one of our fixed date group departures or we can tailor a bespoke tour for you based on your time and budget available.

To be in a position to recommend hotels to our guests I have personally inspected over forty properties throughout Nepal in the main sightseeing places of Kathmandu, Chitwan, Bandipur, Lumbini and Pokhara. So far we have received very positive feedback from our tour groups who have appreciated our first-hand knowledge and experience of the hotels and main points of interest in these places.
