New Development in Southwest Central Durham
|
A chilly but cheerful groundbreaking
|
The large corner lot at West Chapel Hill Street and Kent Street in
Southwest Central Durham will soon look very different. Self-Help is embarking on a $13 million redevelopment of the area, known as Kent Corner.
The redeveloped Kent Corner will feature ample green space, parking, enhanced pedestrian areas and two buildings that will house the nonprofit Center for Child and Family Health and start-up cooperative grocer Durham Central Market. Self-Help and its partners hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on January 6th.

Banks Back Away from Predatory Payday Lending
Good news: banks are pulling their payday lending products from the market. Although some banks had tried to defend these small, high-cost loans, there was no practical distinction between them and payday loans hawked by neon-lit stores: same triple-digit interest rates, same lack of underwriting, same structure that traps people on a treadmill of debt. North Carolina is one of many states that has kept payday loans out - so far. As federal regulators scrutinize the payday industry, there's hope that all types of lenders will get out of this debt-trap business.
