Independence Day and Historic Baseball
July 4, 2015
Enjoy an old-fashioned Fourth with a historic Independence Day celebration in the town of Walnut Hill. Fun for the entire family including pie eating contests, foot races, spelling bees, watermelon seed spitting contests and more! Games begin at 11am; then enjoy historic entertainment and an 1875-rules baseball game. Hear the Walnut Hill mayor read the Declaration of Independence in the Church of the Land and march in a Victorian street parade. The Bluestockings, our 19th century baseball team, play at 2:30 pm.

Flynn Barn Dance

Kick up your heels to live music by the Barn Owl Band in the historic lantern-lit Flynn Barn. Bring the entire family for a rollicking good time with good old-fashioned, toe-tapping, foot-stomping entertainment! No experience is necessary, and no need to bring a partner. John Deere Blacksmith - NEW!

Enjoy a unique and entertaining window to the past, with a presentation by the John Deere Blacksmith, visiting from the John Deere Historic Site in Dixon, Illinois. This presentation carries on the tradition of the blacksmith trade, the same trade practiced by the John Deere company founder over 178 years ago. Witness the blacksmith's talents of shaping metal along with unique tales and lessons.
Ioway Culture Day July 18, 2015 Celebrate the culture of the people of the Ioway nation at our new 1700 Ioway Farm site! The Ioway were some of Iowa's first farmers. Explore the language, tools and foodways of this Native American culture, which gave Iowa its name. Hands-on activities and guest presenters offer visitors an opportunity to experience the ways the Ioway built their homes, prepared food, and farmed. Play an Ioway game and try using hand-made tools. Learn a phrase in the Ioway language and listen to some of the cultural stories passed down to Ioway descendants.
Circuit Court Day July 25, 2015
Join the citizens of Walnut Hill for an afternoon of law and order. Lawyers, witnesses, judge and court clerks, re-created by costumed interpreters, will present real court cases from 1870s Iowa courts. Museum guests will sit on the jury and find out if their verdicts match those of their 19th century predecessors! Cases will be held in Schoolhouse from 11am - 2pm (each lasts approx 20 min).
