Grain Harvest

Saturday, August 2

11:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join us as we harvest oats and wheat on our historic farms. Contrast the labor of hand power using a flail at the 1850 Pioneer Farm to horsepower and steam-powered threshers in action at the 1900 Farm. Take a look at historic machinery demonstrations, a thresher's dinner and enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride.

Demonstrations will be weather dependent. From 11am-4pm enjoy children's crafts, free popcorn and lemonade in the town of Walnut Hill. Walnut Hill Dramatic Society will provide historic entertainment at 11:30am and 1pm, and you're invited to cheer on the Walnut Hill Bluestockings for a Historic Baseball Game at the ball field at 1:30pm.

Historic Baseball Games

Saturdays, August 2, 31

1:30 pm

Catch the action at a historic baseball game, where "strikers", "hurlers", and fielders play by 1870s rules. Encourage the players to leg it to first and let them know when the ball is nicely struck. Cheer on our home team, the Walnut Hill Bluestockings, while learning about the historic baseball rules, such as no overhand pitching and no baseball gloves allowed.

All games are FREE with paid admission to Living History Farms, and the team makes sure kids have a chance to swing the bat at the end of each game.

See the full season schedule at www.LivingHistoryFarms.org/Baseball

Living History Farms is always looking for volunteer teams to play against the Walnut Hill Bluestockings. For more information, contact Jan Milroy, at 515-278-5286.

Victorian Birthday Party

Saturday, August 9

9am-4pm

You're invited to an 1875 Victorian birthday party at the Flynn Mansion! Upon your arrival visit the parlor to sign the birthday girl's autograph book or leave a poem in her scrapbook. Look around at the birthday decorations on the main floor and be sure to explore the boys' and girls' bedrooms upstairs to discover the clothing, toys, and daily life of a privileged Victorian child. Make a party favor to take home, try out some Victorian lawn games, and enjoy a sweet party treat in the side yard.

Homeschool Days

Wednesdays, August 27, September 3

9am-4pm

Nothing is a constant in history like food. During the events on these two days, explore in a fun way how food and nutrition have been a constant in history, from too little food to too much. Discover the impact that changes in technology had on how people produced, prepared, and preserved food that they ate. Learn how technology changed the tasks people did. How many calories do you burn off playing checkers vs. printing with a foot-powered press? How much horsepower does your body generate, compared to a tractor or car? How long does it take to turn cream into butter, or to cook in an open hearth vs. a microwave?

Offered twice: Wednesday, August 27 and Wednesday, September 3, 2014

(Same programming each day)

Preregistration required. Check www.LHF.org/Homeschool soon for preregistration info!
