S pirited: Prohibition in America, Exhibit:
Living History Farms' new exhibit, exploring the history of Prohibition, will open on Monday, June 16. See how things changed from the dawn of the temperance movement to the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment in 1933.
This traveling exhibition from NEH on the Road brings visitors back to the period of flappers and suffragists, bootleggers and temperance lobbyists, and real-life legends, such as Al Capone and Carry Nation. Through strong visual and interactive elements, Spirited draws on histories from both sides of the issue. Experience the inventive and ingenious ways lawmakers and the America public responded to Prohibition. www.LivingHistoryFarms.org/Spirited
Iowa Museum Week Information: In April, Governor Terry Branstad proclaimed June 9-15, 2014 as Iowa Museum Week. With this proclamation Governor Branstad recognizes the importance of Iowa's museums, stating "Iowa Museum Week will celebrate the crucial role of Iowa's museums in preserving the historical fabric and memory of Iowa through preservation of artifacts and archives; in providing educational resources and programs which expand learning opportunities for all ages; in contributing to a vibrant community and state economy through job creation, purchase of goods and services, and by attracting tourism revenue to the community and state; and in their significant role in enhancing community quality of life."
Iowa's museums have a unique role in their community as contributors to the quality of life, economic engines, tourism attractions, and educational partners. Iowa's ninety nine counties are home to hundreds of historical societies and museums as well as to major regional collections in art, history, agricultural, botanical, and living collections.
Iowa's museums attract visitors to area hotels, restaurants, and recreational areas; provide education and outreach for all ages; drive both incoming tourism revenue and job creation; and contribute to the overall quality of life that make Iowa's communities great places to live, work, and raise a family.
