Saturday, May 4, 10:00 AM Social Action Shabbat service. Shirley Juran will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Kiddush luncheon co-sponsored by Shirley Juran and the Luncheon Fund. Friday, May 10, 8:15 PM Kabbalat Shabbat afternoon service followed by an Oneg Shabbat. Saturday, May 11, 10:00 AM Shabbat service with Confirmation and Graduation exercises. A Kiddush luncheon sponsored by the Shabbat Luncheon Fund and enhanced by the parents of the confirmation and graduation class. Shavuot 5773 Tuesday Night, May 14,8:45 PM, Erev Shavuot evening service as well as a "Token Tikun" - a special study session. Study Session - 9:15 - 11:15 PM topped off with traditional ice cream sundaes sponsored by Sisterhood. Our topic: "Z'man Matan Toratenu - The Time of the Giving of our Torah." What does that really mean? What is the meaning of revelation in Judaism, how has this belief evolved over the centuries and how do the various denominations understand this concept? What difference does that make to our practice of Judaism? Join us and make the discussion even more stimulating. Social Action Upcoming Events
Social Action Shabbat, May 4 - Shirley Juran will be honored with a lifetime achievement award for her significant contributions to Tikun Olam during the more than fifty decades in which she has been a member of this synagogue. All are invited to celebrate all of our do-gooders at BSBI. A Kiddush luncheon will follow the service. Head Start Gift Shop, May 10 - We bring small gifts to the Manchester Head Start and help the children wrap them to give to their mothers or any significant women in their lives. Anyone who would like to help is welcome. Please contact Shirley Juran. This is a fun event that takes only an hour or so of your time.
Mitzvah Day, May 19 - Susan Rubin is hard at work on this. If you have not already signed up for this, do so immediately!!! We need to know who is available for each of the activities and we need to plan for lunch. There is something for everyone. Please contact Susan Rubin at 860-649-6442 (evenings) or 860-335-6650 (days).
We will begin with a brief morning service at 9:00 AM. We are looking for someone to organize a BSBI Community Garden. Please contact Cantor Anita or Laurie Bayer if you love to garden and want to help BSBI blossom and grow.
Families In Need: Head Start has contacted us with requests for three families. One family is in need of an electric stove, the second family needs a crib or playpen, and the third family (with 2 children) is looking for a couple of bureaus in which to put their children's clothes. Please call Shirley Juran (860-649-9239) if you have any of these items to donate.

Youth Activities
 RESCHEDULED!!! for the 3rd and hopefully last time!!! LASER QUEST for USYers and all 9-12th graders will take place on Sunday, May 5 from 3pm-5pm. Watch for flyers.
MUSY and Kadima final chapter events are being planned. Watch for a June date of fun and friends.
Upcoming Regional Event: USY/Kadima Final Event at Lake Compounce - May 19
Mazal Tov to our USY chapter who was among those who received a Silver Chapter of Excellence Award at Spring Convention for fulfilling a number of achievements expected of a USY chapter.

Brotherhood Upcoming Events:
The May Brotherhood Business meeting will be held on Sunday, May 5th at 9:30 am. Our guest speaker will be ECSU Professor Cailtin Carenen. Professor Carenen received her PHD in History from Emory University. At Eastern she currently teaches U.S.foreign policy and U.S. religious history. She authored a book entitled " The Fervent Embrace: Liberal Protests, Evangelicals and Israel." First time guests may attend the business meeting and breakfast for free. Our usual business topics will be discussed at that time. At 10:30 am our speaker will be introduced. Non-Brotherhood members of the congregation and their guests are invited at that time to attend the speaker portion of the meeting.

Come celebrate with us as we honor Maxine and Manny Lerman for their exemplary dedication and support to our synagogue and to our community for nearly four decades. We are very fortunate to have members like the Lermans and we want to extend our appreciation by recognizing them at this Honoree Shabbat. We will begin with our 10:00 AM Shabbat service where all their efforts over the past years will be recognized and then continue our celebration following the service with a special Kiddush Luncheon . Everyone is invited - Please join us for this special event in celebration of Maxine and Manny Lerman!

 Shabbat Luncheons - Volunteers Needed We are looking for members who would be willing to sign up for just one Friday a month to pick up food at Crown in West Hartford for our Shabbat luncheons. We also need a couple people who could fill in if the assigned person is unavailable. To volunteer for this community Mitzvah please contact Stacey Poutre at 860-645-1575 or 860-729-5136. Recipes of the Month - Eliana's Lemon Sugar Cookies by Eliana Lebson
SERVINGS: 24 Cookies PREP TIME: 5-10 Minutes TOTAL TIME: 10- 20 Minutes
Ingredients:
-
1 stick of butter or margarine - 2 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup of lemonade powder
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons orange juice
Directions:
- Preheat the oven to 375
- Line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper
- Soften the Butter or Margarine
- Mix all the ingredients in a mixing bowl
- Make the cookies in balls and press them down into cookie shape
- Cook them for 10 minutes
- Let them cool
Author's Note:
1) If you don't have parchment paper you can put them directly on an ungreased cookie sheet.
2) When you take the cookies out of the mixing bowl they will be soft and that is ok
3) They will get harder as they cool
