The Pieces We Keep by Kristina McMorris

Two years have done little to ease veterinarian Audra Hughes's grief over her husband's untimely death. Eager for a fresh start, Audra plans to leave Portland for a new job in Philadelphia. Her seven-year-old son, Jack, seems apprehensive about flying--but it's just the beginning of an anxiety that grows to consume him. As Jack's fears continue to surface in recurring and violent nightmares, Audra hardly recognizes the introverted boy he has become. Desperate, she traces snippets of information unearthed in Jack's dreams, leading her to Sean Malloy, a struggling US Army veteran wounded in Afghanistan. Together they unravel a mystery dating back to World War II and uncover old family secrets that still have the strength to wound--and perhaps, at last, to heal.

Ladies' Home Journal Book Club

In the December Ladies' Home Journal Book Club selection The Death of Bees, novelist Lisa O'Donnell tells the sordid coming-of-age story of two sisters, Marnie and Nelly, who struggle to survive a life of squalid neglect and abuse. Written with fierce sympathy and beautiful precision, told in alternating voices, The Death of Bees is an enchanting, grimly comic tale of three lost souls who, unable to answer for themselves, can answer only for one another..

Short Stories for the Holiday Season

This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz

On a beach in the Dominican Republic, a doomed relationship flounders. In the heat of a hospital laundry room in New Jersey, a woman does her lover's washing and thinks about his wife. In Boston, a man buys his love child, his only son, a first baseball bat and glove. At the heart of these stories is the irrepressible, irresistible Yunior, a young hardhead whose longing for love is equaled only by his recklessness--and by the extraordinary women he loves and loses: artistic Alma; the aging Miss Lora; Magdalena, who thinks all Dominican men are cheaters; and the love of his life, whose heartbreak ultimately becomes his own..

T.C. Boyle Stories II by T.C. Boyle

Few authors write with such sheer love of story and language as T.C. Boyle, and that is nowhere more evident than in his inventive, wickedly funny, and always entertaining short stories. In 1998, T.C. Boyle Stories brought together the author's first four collections to critical acclaim. Now,  T.C. Boyle Stories II gathers the work from his three most recent collections along with fourteen new tales previously unpublished in book form as well as a preface in which Boyle looks back on his career as a writer of stories and the art of making them.

Dear Life by Alice Munro

In story after story in this brilliant new collection, Alice Munro pinpoints the moment a person is forever altered by a chance encounter, an action not taken, or a simple twist of fate. Her characters are flawed and fully human: a soldier returning from war and avoiding his fiancée, a wealthy woman deciding whether to confront a blackmailer, an adulterous mother and her neglected children, a guilt-ridden father, a young teacher jilted by her employer. Illumined by Munro's unflinching insight, these lives draw us in with their quiet depth and surprise us with unexpected turns. Exalted by her clarity of vision and her unparalleled gift for storytelling, Dear Life shows how strange, perilous, and extraordinary ordinary life can be.

The Isle of Youth by Laura van dan Berg

Laura van den Berg's gorgeous new book, The Isle of Youth, explores the lives of women mired in secrecy and deception. From a newlywed caught in an inscrutable marriage, to private eyes working a baffling case in South Florida, to a teenager who assists her magician mother and steals from the audience, the characters in these bewitching stories are at once vulnerable and dangerous, bighearted and ruthless, and they will do what it takes to survive.

Downton Abbey - Season 4

Wendy Wax's While We Were Watching Downton Abbey will be published for the first time as a mass market paperback on sale on the 31st of December, five days before Season 4's U.S. debut. Maybe your group would like to discuss it during Season 4--you may connect with the addictive drama and each other, as did its characters!

Short Stories for Book Clubs

Happy 2007 Holidays

The holiday season is fast upon us, and there is much to do.  Lighten your book club's literary schedule by selecting one of our fantastic short story recommendations. Brush up on 2013 Nobel Prize winner Alice Monro with Dear Life, indulge in the power of love in This is How You Lose Her, or focus on the women centered stories of The Isle of Youth.  The typically masculine writing of T.C. Boyle is a fun choice to mix things up, and also makes a great gift if you're buying for a gentleman.

From all of us at Reading Group Choices, we wish you a very happy holiday and are looking forward to bringing you a slew of promising new 2014 titles.

Thank you for keeping the joy of reading alive!
