Conservancy Launches NatureWorks

Keck Foundation Grant Funds New Educational Program

The Long Beach Public Schools and the Conservancy are celebrating the launch of NatureWorks, an innovative school program to serve Avalon students from kindergarten through 12th grade with hands-on learning about ecology and the environment. The W.M. Keck Foundation, one of the nation's largest philanthropic organizations, provided a generous grant to the Catalina Island Conservancy to initiate the program. Conservancy Supporters Explore Santa Rosa Island

More than 50 Conservancy supporters enjoyed a gorgeous trip to Santa Rosa Island on Sept. 14. The Conservancy sponsored the trip to explore California's second largest Channel Island. The trip paired Conservancy naturalists with those from the Channel Islands National Park.

The group took a scenic boat ride past Santa Cruz Island, enjoyed lunch on the grounds of the historic Vail & Vickers ranch, and some hiked to the one of the only native Torrey Pine groves in the world (the other is in San Diego).

This trip was a great way to see how different the northern Channel Islands can be, while learning about many similar challenges Catalina's ecosystems face. The Channel Islands National Park naturalists were fantastic and added a lot to the trip with their interpretation and vast knowledge of the Island. We thank Joel Justin, (pictured, leading the group), Catherine French and past Conservancy employee, Sarah Ratay, for their help.

See the photo gallery from the trip here. And keep an eye out for our next adventure!

And the Winner Is....

The Stars Come Out for Catalina Island Film Festival

Actors William H. Macy, Andy Garcia and Jason Ritter were among the stars honored at the Catalina Film Festival Sept. 24-28. The annual event is a competitive festival and film market where guests can experience Catalina while enjoying film premieres.

Conservancy sponsors the Isla Earth Award each year, and this year's winner was "Urban Fruit," a documentary about Los Angeles residents seeking to provide fresh fruit and produce to their families and their communities.
