Our Nation's Symbol - The re-establishment of the bald eagle on Catalina is one of the Island's great wildlife success stories.

 FROM THE  PRESIDENT & CEO

Five bald eagle chicks are in the process of leaving their Catalina Island parents with empty-nest syndrome, thanks to the efforts of the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS) and the Catalina Island Conservancy. DDT poisoning had decimated the bald eagle from California's Channel Islands until IWS and the Conservancy partnered to bring them back to Catalina in 1980. They have been nesting on Catalina unaided since 2007.

The wildlife on the Island is part of what makes Catalina so special and unique. To have an eagle soar overhead while you're hiking on a trail is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the many people who made possible the return of these majestic birds to Catalina. It's a truly memorable experience that reminds us of the importance of this work.

Sincerely,
Ann M. Muscat, Ph.D., President and CEO

Staying Safe - Follow the safe wildfire guidelines when out in Catalina's wildlands.

WHEN IT'S HOT, PLAY IT COOL

Catalina Island is experiencing its second drought year in a row, and the possibility of wildfires is very real. Among the tips to keep the Island safe, are: Smoke in designated areas, never smoke while you're hiking or in your car while out in the interior and keep campfires in designated fire rings. Also, pay attention to "Red Flag" alerts.
Hiking Catalina - The Island's undulating terrain can be challenging, but the Little Harbor hike is comfortably paced for all hikers.

SUMMER HIKE TO LITTLE HARBOR

Join a group of hikers on Saturday, July 26, on a scenic 5-mile hike along the ridge route to Little Harbor from Two Harbors. The day includes a beach barbecue lunch with beverages. Conservancy staff will talk about current Island environmental projects. Then, after an afternoon of fun and companionship, everyone boards the bus for the quick trip back to Two Harbors. Organized by the Conservancy's support group the Marineros. Register now!

The Conservancy's front-page coverage continued after outstanding newspaper articles in the last six months highlighted the Catalina Island fox as well as the Island bison herd. The Sunday, May 25, cover of the Los Angeles Times Travel section, headlined "Beyond Avalon: Meet Catalina's Other Half - Rugged and Unspoiled," followed a Jeep Eco Tour and cited the wonders of the Island's wildlands.

CATALINA'S HUMMERS

Three hummingbird species - Anna's, Allen's and Channel Island Allen's - all reside on Catalina Island and own a quality to inspire envy: a voracious sweet tooth, er, beak, as nature's premium nectar consumers, and yet stomachs the size of a pencil erasers. The Conservancy's Isla Earth Radio Series offers a unique look at nature's colorful hummers, who have been flitting in and out of the island California fuchsia.

Not a member of the Conservancy, don't miss out on the opportunities and adventure.
