John Budicin - The plein air artist will be featured in a solo salon on May 17 at Castillo del Mar.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Walking the width of the Island on the BZ Jones Cross Catalina Hike last month with the hearty fellowship of the Marineros support group was great fun. Surviving the uphill climbs on the rugged terrain was both invigorating and challenging. The conversations and amazing views kept me going! Upcoming Conservancy adventures are less physically rigorous but equally fun and supportive of the Conservancy. The Catalina: The Wild Side Solo Salon Featuring John Budicin is set for May 17. John's plein air works featuring Catalina's wildlands are exquisite and Blanny Avalon Hagenah's Castillo del Mar is the perfect setting.
We hope you like our "new look" for Conservancy News. We are testing a couple of formats, so stay tuned to discover which is the winning design. These refreshed publications are an effort to bring more news and features to our donors, members and friends in a lively visual manner.
Sincerely, Ann M. Muscat, Ph.D., President and CEO

The Eagles Have Hatched -- Spring means it's breeding season again for Catalina's bald eagles.
|
EAGLES ARE HATCHING
Love is in the air on Catalina Island, with the bald eagles that had disappeared from the Island for more than two decades continuing their successful recovery during this year's mating season. Eaglets have hatched in two Island nests so far, continuing the legacy of the national icon's successful return to breeding on Catalina. Join the millions who have visited the Institute for Wildlife Studies' eagle cams streaming the hatching and rearing of an eaglet online. Read more.

SOMETHING SHADY OUT ON THE TRAIL
Thanks to the Elliott Family Foundation's generous gift to the Conservancy, hikers can take a break under shade structures found at the top of the Garden to Sky Hike and between Little Harbor and Two Harbors on the Trans-Catalina Trail--which, by the way, was recently featured on the Motion series on the LiveWell Network.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES
A couple weekends ago, 80 or so people took to the trails in honor of Thad and BZ Jones, two brothers who were known for their Catalina adventures. The annual hike, organized by Conservancy's Marineros support group, included magnificent scenery, wildlife sightings and camaraderie. A good time was had by all, and the event funded the Conservancy's work!

DEBRIS IN OCEANS The need to protect Catalina's waters and marine life translated into 479 volunteer divers collecting debris from the bottom of Avalon Bay last month. The annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup, supported by the Conservancy Divers, dredged up a chair, barbeque, phones, bottles, etc. And in this inspirational story on the Conservancy's
you'll hear about the cross-Pacific journey of catamaran built of plastic bottles - and called Plastiki. |
