CATALINA FILM FESTIVAL EXPANDS

The love and passion for film and filmmaking in Avalon was evident during the star-studded third annual Catalina Film Festival (CFF) from September 18 through 22. In what is quickly becoming the "Sundance of the Pacific," six feature-length films made their West Coast premiers with directors and cast members in attendance.

As this year's drought extends into fall, the possibility of Island wildfires is very real. Conservancy Facilities Director Lenny Altherr and Conservation & Education Director John J. Mack offer some tips to keep the Island, your home and yourself safe.

The Catalina Island Conservancy's wildlands trails have become a favorite of endurance athletes. The Catalina Island Triathlon is on November 2, Catalina Island Eco Marathon on November 9, Avalon 50-Mile Benefit Run on January 11 and Catalina Island Conservancy Marathon on March 15. The Catalina Island Conservancy partnered with the National Wild Turkey Federation's (NWTF) Wheelin' Sportsmen Program to provide access in August for wounded warriors - decorated U.S. Marine Corps veterans of recent Afghanistan campaigns - to experience Catalina's wildlands through the Conservancy's game management program.
 
MARINEROS TO CO-HOST 2014 BALL

The Catalina Island Conservancy Marineros, the organization's oldest support group, will serve as co-host for the 2014 Conservancy Ball on Saturday, April 5, 2014.

Bob Reid began duties in August as the Catalina Island Conservancy's new chief development and communications officer. And Jen Poyer, the Conservancy's senior manager of special events and producer of the Conservancy Ball, Catalina: The Wild Side Art Show & Sale and other Conservancy events, has been recognized with a leadership award from the International Special Events Society (ISES).
