COUNTING ALL THE BIRDS AND THE SEEDS
Towhee Jumped Islands - Currently abundant on Santa Catalina, the San Clemente spotted towhee (Pipilo maculatus clementae) has been extirpated from its namesake island due to widespread destruction of shrub habitat by feral goats and sheep. Photo by Tyler Dvorak
If the 785 birds knew about the 240 million seeds, then Catalina might lose the ability to grow some rare plants and a lot of pudgy birds would be flapping at low altitudes. The first number is the total quantity of birds of 36 species counted on the Island in a day by the Conservancy for the North American Breeding Bird Survey. The bigger tally is of the contents in the Conservancy's seed bank, most of them at the Ackerman Native Plant Nursery, and unavailable to the birds.
