Greetings!

Catalina Island's wildlands are especially beautiful this time of year as a spring green has blanketed the landscape and the annual blooms have turned out - giant coreopsis to Johnny-jump-ups to tree poppies to many other species. If you want to see the wildflowers in person, represented in this month's photo gallery, we suggest one of our Jeep Eco Tours.

This month we also highlight the Conservation Department's Amy Catalano (see stories a right).

Sincerely,

Ann M. Muscat, Ph.D., President and CEO

The Catalina Island Fox population has stabilized at 1,500 or so individuals according to the results from the 2012 trapping survey.

SKIP WHITCOMB RETURNS FOR CATALINA: WILD SIDE

By Bob Rhein

In 1971, Skip Whitcomb graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Soon after, fellow painter Ned Jacob introduced him to the virtues of outdoor painting. Growing up in a ranching family instilled in Whitcomb a deep love and respect for the land.

"This connection to our physical world, the natural order, is what I seek to convey in my work," says Whitcomb, and "to let the reality of the facts come alive in my imagination, a living reality, as I see it."

Banner photo: Wildflowers are blooming in the Island's wildlands. The Photo Gallery this month features a compilation of this blooming boom of colorful foliage photographed by Amy Catalano, the Conservancy's biological monitoring technician; Andrew Hobbs, one of our Jeep® Eco-Tour drivers, and Pat Maxwell, director of marketing & communications, who loves to get outdoors and hike! Andrew took this image of a giant coreopsis on Catalina. Enjoy!
