64 SECONDS to Learn Up To 25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
March 24, 2016
1:  From the Principal
Hopefully by the time you are reading this edition of the 6425 News the snow has melted and we can revisit our thoughts of spring.  With the arrival of Spring Break, I am reminded that we are about one quarter away from the end of the school year.  Graduation plans have started to pick up and diplomas are being ordered.

A sincere thank you to all of the families that joined us for conferences.  It was great to get the opportunity to come together for a wonderful evening.   I know time is a precious commodity during this busy time of year.  If you were not able to attend conferences, we look forward to connecting with you at one of our many spring events in the coming weeks.

2: BARR

Building Assets, Reducing Risks (BARR) Program Highlighted in Ed Weekly

Last week, the Building Assets, Reducing Risks (BARR) program was highlighted in an Education Weekly article linked below. The BARR program originated with counselor Angie Jerabek at St. Louis Park High School and it continues to be a pillar of our 9th and 10th grade design today. In the article, one of our St. Louis Park High School teachers, Brad Brubaker, shares his insights about the power of the program.

5: Financial Aid
How Do I Pay for my Post-Secondary School?  Very few families can afford to pay for college without help. That's why there's FINANCIAL AID-money provided to students to help their families pay for their college education. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is THE MOST important document you will fill out concerning your financial aid!

How the Amount of Student Aid is Determined

If you have additional questions about financial aid for your student, please contact the financial aid office of the post-secondary school your student plans to attend or Kara Mueller at mueller.kara@slpschools.org.

11: Echo
Echo students received some good news Friday.

The 2015 Echo won its second consecutive Gold Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in the hybrid news category. For this category, judges examine the current website and the previous year's print editions. The Gold Crown is the highest award the national organization bestows. In total, 19 schools won Gold Crowns and 24 won Silver Crowns in the hybrid category nationally. For more information about CSPA's Crown contest see this
link.

Thanks for supporting the Echo staffers. They couldn't achieve all of this without you!

12: Pottery

Last week in Pottery we had a special guest visitor, local ceramic artist, Jeff Haddorff! Jeff discussed the importance of putting their individual, unique perspective on each piece and to find new and interesting ways to add texture and interest in their pottery artworks. Jeff showed each class examples of his artwork and described how he creates his large-scale sculptures. Finally, he demonstrated how he works by making a small scale sculpture. Students had a great time asking questions and seeing Jeff work! It was a great opportunity for students to hear about the local art scene!

Thank you,

13: French Field Trip
On Friday, March 18th, sixty French II and III students accompanied Mme Sweeney and Mme Conrad on the 6th annual field trip to a local French restaurant.  This year we ate at the Iron Range Restaurant formerly known as Chez Daniel at the Embassy Suites in Bloomington. Students ate chicken, beef, or quiche, a salad and chocolate mousse.
14: Spanish Field Trip

Spanish students experienced a different theater format at DJ Latinidad's Latino Dance Party.  At this play/dance party, students experienced stories of modern day Latinos living in the U.S., showing both the difficulties of being a new immigrant and the rewards of defining your identity.  Students had a blast interacting and dancing with the actors to the rhythm of salsa, merengue, vallenato and hip hop...and of course La Macarena.
15: Geography & Global Awareness

Students in Mrs. Siddiqui's Geography & Global Awareness class have been studying Asian countries, culture and religions for the last few weeks.  To wrap up this unit, students are creating a children's book on an Asia continent country, or Australia and Oceania country.  This book is bound using Japanese book binding methods.  These books will be read to Kindergarteners or 1st graders later this spring, and the books will be donated to the school.

Students photographed were either working on completing their Japanese book binding, origami (traditional Japanese paper folding) or practicing their hand at Chinese calligraphy.

Thank you!
