PBSD SAFETY COMMITTEE NEWS: BIKE LANE UPDATE

Courtesy of the Pelican Bay Services Division

The PBSD Board addressed
the issue of bicycle/pedestrian and vehicle safety at its most recent meetings on 09/3/14 and 10/2/14.

The Board recommended to Collier County that both Pelican Bay Blvd. and Gulf Park Dr. have "sharrow" lane markings placed on the outside lanes after Pelican Bay Blvd. is repaved in October and November. The travel lane dimensions of both roads will remain 12 feet wide. "Yield to Pedestrians" in crosswalk signs will replace the current "Stop for Pedestrians" signs.

What are SHARROWS? Sharrows or shared lane markings are bicycle symbols that are carefully placed on a travel lane to guide bicycles to the best place to ride on the road and to remind drivers to share the road with cyclists.

Sharrows do not designate a particular part of the road for the exclusive use of bicyclists. They simply guide the bicyclists to the best place to ride.

The addition of the "sharrow" markings will alert motor vehicles that bicycles maybe encountered in the lane and to share the lane with them.

Motorists, by State Law, must allow 3 feet between themselves and any bicycle they are passing. The best way to obey this State Law is to move to the inside lane when passing a bicycle.

These lane markings and laws protect bicyclists on our roads and!
remind motorists of their legal responsibility to allow 3 feet when passing a cyclist and to allow bicyclists to use the full lane of our 12 foot travel lanes when safety makes it necessary.

Cyclists should ride to the right over the sharrows to maximize safety.
SUMMIT BROADBAND UPDATE

It's been roughly one month since Summit began in-home installations. Summit Broadband continues to make headway throughout the community. While Summit has completed close to 500 installations, the overall process has fallen far short of expectations. Though the majority of residents' experiences have been favorable, others are reporting that Summit's service has been completely unacceptable, with missed appointments, delays, technical difficulties and, as a result, multiple reschedulings.  The Foundation has taken a very proactive position with Summit and is aggressively working to resolve the issues.

Since the onset of the transition, the Foundation has continuously held Summit Broadband accountable for its delays and the inconveniences they have caused, and has negotiated credits for those experiencing issues with or delays in service. The Foundation also continues to pursue member feedback and take action as a result of that input. Therefore, it is imperative that members continue to share feedback regarding installations, service and overall experience.

To help, the Foundation maintains connect@pelicanbay.org. In addition, it has also welcomed a new representative, Barbara Johnston, to assist with Summit post-installation matters specifically. She can be reached at bjohnston@pelicanbay.org.

The Foundation will remain vigilant of Summit's progress, demanding (and expecting) improvements in the upcoming weeks.
