"WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS"
Lightning on Beach
It has been reported in local news this week that there was a recent death and major injuries caused by lightning strikes at Fort Myers Beach.
The National Weather Service reports that there is little one can do to substantially reduce the risk if outside in a thunderstorm.  The only completely safe action is to get inside a safe building or vehicle.

Although "ThorGuard" is a safeguard measure that uses its technology to predict lightning in the Pelican Bay vicinity, it is only good when "personal responsibility is used as the best defense".  After hearing the first 15-second horn signaling that lightning is on its way, members, guests and staff are given 10 minutes to board the trams and leave the premises. After 10 minutes, all trams will be shutdown until three short horn blasts signal the all clear. Please exercise personal caution. The Foundation staff will not advise you on your decision to seek shelter or not.

The NOAA provides lightning safety tips to inform the community of what to do when lightning and thunderstorms are present:

If you're outside and hear thunder, the only way to significantly reduce your risk of becoming a lightning casualty is to get inside a substantial building or hard topped metal vehicle as fast as you can. In addition, you should avoid the following situations which could increase your risk of becoming a lightning casualty. Remember - there is no substitute for getting to a safe place.
  • Avoid open areas. Don't be the tallest object in the area.
  • Stay away from isolated tall trees, towers or utility poles. Lightning tends to strike the taller objects in an area.
  • Stay away from metal conductors such as wires or  fences. Metal does not attract lightning, but lightning can travel long distances through it.

SUMMIT BROADBAND UPDATE
Since early this year, Summit Broadband has been working to contact every Pelican Bay resident to determine whether or not they will make the switch to Summit. To date, the team has been unable reach approximately 725 residents.  If you have not been in contact with a Summit representative, regardless of whether or not you intend to use Summit's services, please contact them as soon as possible, by phone at (239) 529-1500 or by email at PelicanBay@Summit-Broadband.com.

In addition to reaching out to this group of residents, the Summit Broadband team is working to complete conduit installations at single family homes in Pelican Bay.  The team has also scheduled more than 1,360 in-home installation appointments, which will begin (as previously reported) in August.

As a Reminder:

Residents who have an email address tied to a current service provider should switch their email address prior to the date of installation. Those who have opted to use Summit's phone service should not cancel their current phone service (or enable vacation mode) as Summit will be unable to forward an inactive number during installations.

Questions? Call the Summit Pelican Bay hotline (239) 529-1500.
CHECK CROTONS FOR SCALES

Courtesy of Doug Caldwell, Ph.D., U.F. Commercial Landscape Horticulture Extension, Collier County

Be sure to check your crotons closely for scale insects. These suckers don't look like other insects. They don't move and their legs & antennae are hidden underneath a waxy shell while they are sucking the life out of your plants - eventually killing them.

They look like bumps and are often confused with buds. These are the female scales.  The males congregate on the underside of croton leaves and look like hordes of smaller white bumps. This soft scale prefers Crotons, Firebush and Gumbo limbo, plus about 70 other plant species.

Help is on the Way: A Blue Lady Beetle & Her Larvae
Nature keeps things in balance. As a population of a pest rises, so does the quantity of natural enemies that can control it. So far the "attack bugs" have not slowed it down.

But, there is one lady beetle which is helping suppress it. And it is NOT the normal red, but a pale blue. The Globe-marked Lady Beetle Azyza orbigera.  Also, don't be confused by the larvae of this lady beetle, as they look like mealybugs!

One reason not to spray your crotons with an insecticide is that you will kill this helper at the same time.  Go for a systemic product instead. Used as a soil drench, the product will be absorbed by the plant and only kill insects that are sucking on it.

Watch Doug Caldwell's video to learn more about adding colorful crotons to your landscape.
