Defining shoreline holds up Couture decision
|
According to an article in the Milwaukee Business Journal earlier this week, Milwaukee County has taken its lawsuit over the lakefront Couture development to Milwaukee County Circuit Court, seeking a judge's approval to sell the Downtown Transit Center for the project.
MMAC lobbied successfully last legislative session to statutorily establish the 1835 Lake Michigan shoreline boundary in state law. Preserve Our Parks has challenged the constitutionality of that law and is calling for a more restrictive shoreline definition. If they are successful, the Couture and other development would be prohibited or severely restricted in this high-value corridor on Milwaukee's east side.
"Some of the most transformative economic projects in our city are slated to take place in the very corridor the Preserve Our Parks is trying to shut off from development," said MMAC President Tim Sheehy, "A prompt legal decision affirming the validity of the law we worked to pass last session is key to keeping these projects moving forward."
The Couture would replace the Downtown Transit Center at the corner of East Michigan Street and North Lincoln Memorial Drive. >>MORE
