Those Afflicted by Friedreich's Ataxia
Benefit from Project Wheels Fundraiser to be Held May 3rd

Project Wheels was co-founded by Patrick Cogan and his mother Helen Cogan to help those affected by Friedreich's Ataxia (FA). Patrick, himself, suffers from this rare neuromuscular disease that limits mobility and free movement and often requires special equipment such as wheelchairs, retro-fitted vehicles and home wheelchair ramps.

The Project Wheels Foundation works with supporters to help individuals afflicted by FA to maintain their independence and live an obstacle-free life.

Long-time friend of the Cogan family, Joel Solimine learned of Patrick's affliction with FA and when Helen mentioned that Patrick needed a wheelchair ramp, Joel's dad, David Solimine, Jr. called upon his contacts in the construction business to have one built. Events to raise money to purchase a special wheelchair van netted $50,000 and Helen reached out for help to create a foundation to help others with FA who have similar needs.

Joel Solimine said, "The answer to her call was an easy YES." The Project Wheels Foundation now focuses on raising money to help others with FA. Recently a young woman from Lynn was the recipient of $5,000 from Project Wheels to help fund the rebuild of a bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible. Patrick commented, "It is an amazing feeling when you can help someone else - to know that you've touched a life to make things a bit easier. It is very frustrating to lose your independence."

A Project Wheels event last fall raffled off World Series tickets (Game 7) that were donated by Joel Solimine and raised $7,000! Patrick explained, "One of the goals of Project Wheels is to become a $1MM foundation. In the meantime, we want to help as many people with FA as we can to regain some measure of independence. I understand the everyday frustrations of having FA. Until I had a wheelchair van, I had to take apart my wheelchair before putting it into the backseat of my car. Then I drove to where I was going, only to have to reassemble the wheelchair. It was really a pain! The wheelchair van has helped immensely."

On May 3rd, the Project Wheels Foundation will hold a fund raiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Lynn from 6 pm to 10 pm. There will be music by Cuppa of Joe, a jazz and blues quintet from Newburyport, dinner, cash bar, silent auction, and numerous raffles. All money raised will go to those afflicted with FA. Tickets are $25 each and can be obtained online or by calling 781-929-9941or emailing Patrick Cogan.

Friedreich's Ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder that affects about one in 50,000 people in the U.S. Symptoms can include loss of coordination in the arms and legs; energy fatigue and muscle loss; vision impairment, hearing loss and slurred speech; aggressive scoliosis; diabetes, and/or serious heart conditions.

The mental capabilities of individuals with FA remain intact but the progressive loss of coordination and muscle strength leads to motor incapacitation and the full-time need for a wheelchair.

Patrick Cogan is currently employed at the Marriott Courtyard in Danvers as night manager. He also competes as a tri-athlete swimming (with a guide), biking (on a recumbent bicycle) and "running" (with my racing wheelchair)."   Patrick explained. "I like to stay as active as I can. Setting goals for myself is key - physical, mental, financial. For those of us with FA, the overall goal is to be as independent as we can for as long as we can."

To donate to the Project Wheels Foundation or to purchase tickets for the May 3rd fundraiser, visit their website or call 781-929-9941 or email Patrick Cogan

 Frequently Asked Questions

"Pre-Planning: Do you have to Pre-Pay when you Pre-Plan?"

The simple answer is NO, you do not have to pre-pay when you pre-plan.

Pre-planning is the opportunity to sit with a funeral director and ask lots of questions, find out about the services that are available to you, understand options that are available with either cremation or burial, and begin the process of making decisions about the type of funeral service that is most in accord with your values.

People pre-plan for a variety of reasons. Certainly, funeral planning isn't something people want to think about every day. But, if you put it off, family members may not be prepared, either emotionally or financially, to make the many decisions that must be made.

During the pre-planning conference, the funeral director will record your wishes and desires so that this information is readily available for your family when it is needed. This helps to ensure that your wishes will be carried out; and that loved ones are relieved of having to make difficult decisions about what you would have wanted. Doing this provides you - and them - with a great deal of peace of mind. As part of the arrangement process, the funeral director will help you to think about how best to create a personalized memorial that will hold special meaning to those in attendance.

Pre-arranging allows you to compare services, facilities and prices for different types of funerals, and to choose what is best for you and your family. There are so many options available today, and a funeral director can help you select the service options that will be best suit your budget and needs.

Pre-planning is often a part of general estate planning, and enables you to set aside appropriate funds in a vehicle that is considered an exempt asset when qualifying for Medicaid.   You will also have the opportunity to determine pricing, and to decide whether pre-paying for your arrangements is appropriate for you.

There are a number of reasons why people decide to pre-pay for funerals and we'll be happy to discuss them with you, if you'd like. One certain benefit of pre-planning is that you can get cost estimates for the funeral you are considering and make any necessary adjustments during a time when you are thinking rationally and not overwhelmed with emotion.

Most importantly, prearranging provides you with genuine peace of mind and a sense of freedom, knowing that you have made informed-decisions and that everything is taken care of.
