An Extra Special Day at Extra Special People!

It was a sultry Friday morning on June 28th and it was Friend of Flag Day at Extra Special People in Watkinsville! Members of the Foundation and Georgia Club friends were inspired and lifted up during this high-energy breakfast hour at ESP that brings summer campers together with the community for a truly thrilling end of week pick-me-up.

Board members Bill Huggins, Pat Hodgson, Jeff Bell, and Mary Marshall, along with Front Porch Foot Race Director, Sam DabbsPam and Jim McCutcheon, parents of camper Megan, and
Ron Alton, were on hand to participate in The Georgia Club Foundation's presentation of a $14,000 donation to this awesome group as beneficiary of this year's Front Porch Foot Race.

The eight week summer camp at ESP currently serves around 160 individuals with developmental disabilities. "Being at camp with the kids brings an indescribable joy - seeing them thrive, try new things, and make lasting friendships," says Jordan Beaman, Communications and Special Events Coordinator at ESP. "We are fortunate to have 40 amazing counselors who have dedicated their summer to serve the campers. They work to help the campers meet goals and have fun but most of all they form a bond that lasts for years to come. I believe that the counselors, volunteers, and staff receive just as much, maybe more, from spending time with the campers then the campers themselves receive from being at camp."

Food Pantry Donation In Winder
On Tuesday, July 2, Georgia Club resident
Bob Willoughby, along with Board members Bill Huggins, Pat Hodgson, Mary Marshall, and Bob Cullerton visited the Food Pantry in Winder.  The Food Pantry, located adjacent to the Clothes Closet, are just two of the programs managed by Barrow County Cooperative Benevolence Ministries, an organization dedicated to helping those in the community who need a little help as a result of illness, job loss, or loss of family members. With a core of very dedicated donors and volunteers, including participants from The Georgia Club community, BCCBM has given much needed support to many individuals and organizations in the community and they do so with no paid staff and expenses of only utilities, insurance, and repairs.

The Georgia Club Foundation has remained faithful to bringing food to hungry children in the community.  After touring their neatly organized facility and visiting with volunteers including Ellen Petree, coordinator of the Food 2 Kids program, and Shannon Derrick, Barrow County school system social worker, the Foundation gladly presented a check in the amount of $5,000 as a contribution to the Food  2 Kids program. Graciously accepting the donation were Al Brown, Food Pantry committee head, and Gwen Hill, BCCBM Board Chairman.

Adopt a Family in 2013!

Can you believe Christmas is just around the corner? For most of us Christmas is a season of friends and family, great food, and gifts of joy. But for those families in need and particularly those with children the holiday is just another problem to worry about.

In its ninth year,The Georgia Club Foundation is thrilled to launch this year's activity on the Adopt-A-Family Program! Georgia Club residents Jay and Joyce Milner will be chairing this significant effort in 2013, along with the help of Katie Mercardante. The Foundation wishes to recognize the incredible work of Michele Callahan for overseeing this very important program for the last three years, and we extend a special thank you to her and her team of volunteers for a job well done!

Again this year the Foundation will support up for adoption families in Barrow and Oconee counties that have been identified by Family Connection based upon level of need.  Family connection is a statewide organization that helps coordinate the efforts of community leaders, schools, parents, and students to make measurable improvements for children and families. Families can qualify only one time for the Adopt-A-Family Christmas Program and are those facing dire circumstances due to the death of a parent, long term loss of employment, or children who are being cared for solely by a fixed income grandparent or elderly guardian.

We hope you will consider participating this year.  Watch for more information soon!
