"After I was treated by Dr. Wing, I played the best game of golf in my life. I was able to resolve injuries from a car accident in which I was rear ended about five years ago."

DAOM ACCREDITATION

DAOM PROGRAM EARNS FULL ACCREDITATION

Yo San University is very pleased to announce that effective September 16, 2013 its Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) Program has been  awarded full accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM).     The announcement of accreditation by ACAOM followed more than ten years of development of the program and four years of its implementation.   The accreditation process included significant examination of the program at the stages of "Substantive Change" achieved in 2009, and "Candidacy" achieved in 2011, and culminated in the March 2013 site visit by four distinguished doctoral level peer site visitors, who again scrutinized all aspects of the program.   Their observations resulted in the generation of a report that designated "compliance" regarding each of the fourteen rigorous program standards specified by ACAOM.

The Yo San University DAOM Program, which has already graduated two cohorts, has two specialty areas:   Reproductive Medicine/Women's Health and Healthy Aging/Longevity.   <READ MORE>

Doctoral Degree

White-Eagle Perry, LAc., Dipl.Ac. (Cohort 3)
Healthy Aging

We recently asked some of our Longevity and Healthy Aging DAOM candidates to explain what they learn in their specific DAOM program.  Here is one response that we received from our candidate White-Eagle Perry.

What is the definition of "Healthy Aging"? Is it synonymous with "anti-aging" from Western medicine where they focus on patients who want to stay young through chemicals, plastic surgery, or the latest herb promoted on The Doctors or Dr. Oz? I don't think so. It is just a focus of geriatrics -- a sub-specialty of internal medicine and family medicine that focuses on the health care of elderly people? Again, I don't think so.

So then what does "Health Aging" mean? Aging is a process from birth until death and we have unique health concerns at different stages of our lives. What may be the root of a disease at 29, may not be the same at 69. Thus aging healthily really needs to begin as young as possible in order to develop healthy habits that last a life time.  Think: Jack Lalane!

This means that Yo San's Healthy Aging & Longevity program is wide open to whatever you want to focus on for your assignments, externships and capstone project. It could be diabetes, stress, dermatology, cardiology, or just about anything you desire to learn more about. You'll also be given many great teachers and advisors to help guide you so that you not only complete your project, but have a good understanding of the research process. You may even decide to focus on being a research doctor in order to help our profession grow!

Welcome to a new and exciting path if you so choose to take it and I welcome you as a brother and fellow Longevity & Healthy Aging specialist.

Athletic Performance Effect of Acupuncture on Baseball Pitching: A Literature Review
Neil Maki, DAOM, Lac

Due to its analgesia and anti-inflammation properties, acupuncture as part of sports medicine treatment has been reported to be an effective intervention for pain management.  The assertion that acupuncture can be used to enhance athletic training is supported by positive effects in empirical research results, including improvement of muscle strength and performance enhancement.

An observation of a baseball pitcher revealed that the speed of fastballs began to decrease after about 50 pitches. However, with the intervention of acupuncture, the speed remained stable and/or decreased very little after treatments.  While contemporary research has focused on the curative properties of acupuncture in common sports injuries, little research has explored the effect of acupuncture on trained baseball pitchers. This article considers the potential of using acupuncture to improve the performance of non-injured pitchers in terms of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theories and modern exercise science.  <READ MORE>

Dr. Wing-Benn Deng
Dr. Wing-Benn Deng holds a thriving  private practice in the Yo San clinic where he treats many patients for pain management (sports injuries, arthritis, joint and back pain, migraines and chronic headaches), allergies, high blood pressure, stress management, male and female infertility, Tuina (massage), nutritional counseling, and treatment of senior citizen health problems. In addition to, Dr. Deng supervises the training of Clinical Interns at Yo San University where he specializes in Pain Management.

"My son had struggled more than 15 years with severe back pain. After one visit, Dr. Deng sent him home pain free. I was completely astonished because years ago in Illinois, I had tried acupuncture to relieve nerve damage pain and there was no effect. Dr. Deng has a level of skill I can only call a gift. We are forever grateful to him." --Rosemarie Di Matteo

Understanding the importance behind balancing the mind, body, spirit Dr. Deng is the author of the widely read "Ask Wing" column in the monthly publication COMMUNI-CHI where he answers questions from readers about the complex practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine and offers insight and tips into Tai Chi and Qi Gong practice and how others can reach levels of balance.  <READ MORE>

"I am a volunteer and the official team acupuncturist for Santa Monica College football team. My brother coaches the quarterbacks on the team and coincidentally I was coached by the head coach and the defensive coordinator 15 years ago at Whittier college. I really want to get into sports acupuncture so I asked my brother if I could come and do his team. I came once and the kids ate it up! It was a no-brainer from that point on.  I'm getting valid experience and they're getting free treatments.< READ MORE>
