TEACHER GRANT PROGRAM SPRING HIGHLIGHTS
Spoonflower Textile Competition:
FHS Art Teacher Elissa DeChick challenged her Graphic Arts students to create unique designs and devised a contest that allowed the entire student body to vote for their favorites. The top three vote-getters (L to R), Hannah Netzker, Christina Luciana and Casey Semler, received fabric imprinted with their creations at the March Board of Education meeting.
Sand Mandala Experience with Lama Tenzin:
Gayle Rachford, FHS Social Studies teacher, was awarded a FACET grant to invite Lama Tenzin Yigyen, a visiting professor at Hobart William Smith College, to FHS for a six-day sand mandala experience. Lama Tenzin captivated his audience through both construction and instruction, as he shared with students, staff and visitors the central tenets of Buddhism, compassion and goodness, while constructing the mandala. He was very open to questions and the majority of FHS students were able to observe and learn from him during this unique experience.
NASA HUNCH Program Tool Box:
Donna Himmelberg and Gene Gordon, advisors to the FHS NASA HUNCH Club,
(High school students United with NASA to Create Hardware)
requested funds to purchase tools to establish a permanent supply chest for the club, something that had been provided by NASA in the past. FACET obliged with funding for the tools and the district's STEM Department provided the tool chest.
HUNCH is an innovative school-based program that partners NASA at Johnson Space Center, Marshall Space Fight Center, and Langley Research Center with high schools and middle schools across the nation. The partnership involves students fabricating real-world products for NASA as they apply their science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills as well as learning to work in teams and think creatively. Advisors and four students just returned from NASA in Houston to test their experiments...follow Fairport's NASA Hunch Team to see the results!
