Hearing the word "taxes" may conjure negative thoughts to most people - but not our accounting students. Each spring, approximately 30 students in the College of Business (CoB) volunteer hours of their time to help members of the community prepare and file their individual taxes, for free. The students do this work as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Taxpayers with household incomes of $54,000 or less are eligible for basic return preparation services.

The students are IRS-certified volunteers who provide free basic income tax return preparation including electronic filing. Students have to pass multiple exams developed by the IRS and log many hours of training before they are allowed to start preparing returns. Then the students are scheduled for nearly eight weeks of tax return preparation service at two hours per week. The CoB offers a one-credit class to students for completing the program.

VITA has been a successful program with 31 student volunteers (one outside CoB) and nearly 500 returns completed in spring 2015.

The 2016 tax return service will begin February 16, 2016 and conclude April 13, 2016. All sessions will be located in 1127 Gerdin on campus. To learn more or sign up for an appointment, visit the VITA website

Did you know? The College of Business grew 10% this year which broke the enrollment record from 1986. That's why faculty in the college has increased by 20% over the last two years, enabling it prepare students for successful careers by adding programs in Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship, and Sales. The CoB continues to stay connected with business leaders to provide the experiences students need to secure the best jobs possible following graduation.
