Alliance for Iowa State
- Make Your Voice Heard -

Earlier this month, the Iowa Energy Summit brought together energy and efficiency experts from across the state for a daylong conference. Several Iowa State professors and staff were featured as speakers as part of a conference track sponsored by the Iowa Energy Center. The annual summit is a fantastic opportunity for the Iowa State community to show its commitment to energy innovation, demonstration, and education.

Three of Iowa State University's own gave presentations based on work sponsored in part by grants from the Energy Center. Dr. Laura Jarboe (Chemical and Biological Engineering), Dr. Sri Sritharan (Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering), and Jay Staker (Extension & Outreach) were recipients of the Energy Center's annual Impact Award. These awards are given to grantees that exemplify the Energy Center's mission to support economic development, environmental sustainability, and social well-being for Iowans.

The Energy Center program also included a panel that brought together leaders in biotechnology. The Cultivating Biorenewables in Iowa panel included Norm Olson (Iowa Energy Center), David Grewell (ISU Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering), Joe Hrdlicka (Iowa Biotechnology Association), Brent Willett (Cultivation Corridor), and Brad Albin (Renewable Energy Group, Inc.). The panel fielded questions relating to policy surrounding biorenewables and looked at Iowa's global impact on the industry.

This year the Iowa Energy Center's grant programs have set aside $1.6 million to award researchers and nonprofits doing work in the energy sector. Through its work with Iowa's universities, community colleges, nonprofits, and others, the Energy Center is helping to ensure that Iowa will continue to lead the way in renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives for years to come.

Panel speakers David Grewell, Brad Albin, Joe Hrdlicka, Norm Olson, and moderator Brent Willett share their thoughts on Iowa's role in the growing biotechnology industry.
