This evening, Iowa State University will host its third annual Community Supper, an opportunity to come together in honor of veterans, military personnel, and their families.

Held in the Memorial Union's Great Hall, the event is part of a series of events the University holds in conjunction with Veterans Day every year.

"The Community Supper is a perfect example of how Iowa State and the broader community comes together in support of those who have served, some of whom have given he ultimate sacrifice," Jathan Chicoine, Iowa State's Veterans Services Coordinator, said. "The Community Supper brings a wide range of people together, which shows how many lives are connected to those in military service."

Each year, a commanding officer from one of Iowa State's three ROTC programs serves as the Master's of Ceremony. This year, Major Ethan Dial, Army ROTC's Commanding Officer, will serve in this capacity. Richard Reynolds, Director of the Memorial Union, will be the honored guest and will speak about the MU's Gold Star Hall and reflect on the significance of Monday's Gold Star Ceremony.

"Many family members who attended the Gold Star Ceremony have expressed appreciation for the recognition of the sacrifices made by their loved ones and the healing provided by the ceremony," Reynolds said. "I have appreciated the opportunity to be involved with this ceremony since its inception because it honors the tradition upon which the Memorial Union was founded."

Tonight's Community Supper is one more opportunity for faculty, staff, students, and the surrounding community to honor our veterans. It is one of many events supported by the Iowa State Veterans Centerwhich serves as a place to connect veterans who are faced with the unique challenges associated with transitioning to a university setting.

"The single most important thing we can do is provide a space where members of our community can come together around a shared experience," Chicoine said. "The Veterans Center allows us to create opportunities for those who might feel removed and connect with them in ways that create deeper empathy and understanding."

Hosted by the Iowa State Veteran's Center, the annual Community Supper honors veterans and their families.
