Never before has public expectation of state universities been so high. One great example of this is the state's view of universities as drivers of innovation and economic prosperity. Iowa State embraces this responsibility and has made economic development a top priority. Last week the university presented its annual report on economic development impact to the Board of Regents.

Iowa State University helps the economy grow by providing:
  • a world class education that provides students with the technical, analytical, problem-solving, communications, and social responsibility skills required in today's workplace.

Experiential learning is important to student professional development and provides companies an opportunity to "scout the talent." Last year more than 2,400 Iowa State students completed internships at more than 700 Iowa companies in 78 counties; hundreds more participated in company projects on campus.

  • research and technology transfer which involves translating the technologies and discoveries developed from university research into new products and services and improved methods for creating and delivering these new offerings.

Last year the ISU Research Foundation executed 108 license/option agreements for technologies developed at Iowa State, including 61 to Iowa businesses and four to new startup companies. Iowa State licensed technologies generated $237 million of sales revenue globally and ranked 70th in the world among universities granted U.S. utility patents.

  • business and technical assistance to help existing companies improve their performance and global competitiveness and to support the creation of new companies.

Last year the Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS) and the Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC) served more than 4,200 Iowa businesses representing all 99 counties and helped create or retain nearly 6,800 jobs. Additionally, the programs helped start more than 250 new businesses. The total impact on increased sales, reduced costs, and generated investment exceeded $490 million.
Did you know? Iowa State University is the only regent institution and only one of three institutions within the Big 12 to achieve the top 100 worldwide universities granted U.S. utility patents in 2014.
