Rexanne and Brandie of the Struve family farm in Manning, Iowa
Iowa women have always been involved in family farming operations.Today, more and more women are the farmer--one in three in Iowa.

Women navigating through changing roles, gaining respect for new responsibilities, and finding success in the business of agriculture has its challenges. This shift in rural Iowa can sometimes be uncomfortable for everyone involved.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has more than 100 years of experience working with Iowa farmers. During changing times, Extension has connected farmers to university and community resources that lead to confident decision making and increased comfort with new responsibilities. Extension has always reached out to rural women but focused primarily on their family roles. Today, ISU Extension and Outreach is focusing on women in agriculture and offers courses to match the needs of the evolving role.

Farm women say they enjoy learning with and from other women. They appreciate having a place to go to talk about their farm business and learn from others with more experience. The ISU Extension and Outreach program Annie's Project has given women this type of experience for the last 11 years. Women come back asking for more topics to be covered because they want to succeed on a higher level, and they look to the university to provide the connections.

ISU Extension and Outreach is responding with new courses and statewide offerings that support women in agriculture.

Did you know? Women make up 49% of undergraduates enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Iowa State. In 1996, only 37% of CALS undergrads were women.
