In a particularly difficult legislative session from a budget perspective, no group or institution received everything they asked for. Iowa State University was no different. Most significantly, the legislature did not appropriate dollars in accordance to the Board of Regents Performance-Based Funding model. 

Although disappointed with this outcome, the university is grateful for the resources the legislature was able to invest in Iowa State. The legislature did recognize the spirit of Performance-Based Funding and appropriated differing amounts to each institution. Iowa State received a $1.2 million operating increase as a result of growing enrollment which encompasses more than 20,000 Iowans - more than any other institution. In addition, the legislature appropriated $2.3 million in one-time resources.

Additionally, the General Assembly appropriated $40 million to the ISU Student Innovation Center starting in FY2017. The Student Innovation Center will have a significant impact on Iowa manufacturers through its hands on, experimental learning theme. The Center will create connections with Iowa manufacturers to meet hiring needs and spur innovations that will help Iowa companies stay competitive in the global marketplace. The facility will be a student-focused think tank engaging students, faculty, and industry partners.
