As another school year begins for Iowa's life science educators, Iowa State University's Biotechnology Outreach Education Center (BOEC) is going back to school with them.
Educators want to prepare students for life science jobs like laboratory technicians and research scientists to help grow Iowa's STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) economy. But shrinking school budgets present challenges. So the BOEC offers free supplies for K-14 Iowa educators who are willing to be trained in their use.
22 Years and Counting
Part of the Office of Biotechnology, the BOEC is marking its 22nd consecutive school year of providing equipment and supplies to Iowa's educators. Their students can investigate DNA fingerprinting, selecting genes, modifying traits, and other lab skills.
Streamlined Ordering for Educators
Ordering supplies is as easy as ordering pizza - only better! Educators e-mail or call in their orders then the supplies and equipment are delivered to schools or extension offices at no cost. Recyclable supplies are sent back to Iowa State to be reused.
When Free Supplies Aren't Enough
Some life science educators may not have enough lab space or expertise. They have the will, and the BOEC has the way by offering field trips to the BOEC on campus or on-site school visits.
During the school year, educators can bring students to the BOEC on a field trip for an hour or a whole day of activities, selected from nearly 30 options or custom designed. The only cost to participants is their transportation and meals.
If a school's transportation funds are limited, Iowa educators can arrange a free on-site visit from BOEC staff, who bring the supplies and equipment students need.
Did you know? The Office of Biotechnology was a pioneer in STEM education, establishing its outreach education program in 1988.
