Internships are an important part of Iowa State students' career development, offering practical work experience in a field of study. Six Iowa State Rising Star interns experienced that last summer and were introduced to the wealth of Iowa State resources available to Iowans through Extension and Outreach.
The students -- with majors in Dietetics; Landscape Architecture; Child, Adult, Family Services; Design; Kinesiology and Health; and Nutritional Science -- applied their undergraduate education as they investigated regional foods systems to uncover challenges faced by communities in northwest and southeast Iowa.
Working in multidisciplinary teams of three, the students were directed to focus on issues with potential for significant measurable community impact. Each student determined a goal and created an action plan that personalized the internship experience. Supervised by Extension and Outreach regional directors, the teams worked alongside Extension and Outreach staff, local food producers, merchants and service agencies. They talk about the experience in this Rising Stars video.
The Rising Star internships fulfill the goals of the land grant university that Iowa pioneers imagined - benefiting learners across the university and state. Rising Star internships are currently offered through the Colleges of Design and Human Sciences in cooperation with ISU Extension and Outreach, with potential for growth in more colleges.
