Meet Aiddy Phomvisay '96, '04

Marshalltown, Iowa

Marshalltown High School Principal Aiddy Phomvisay ('96 B.S. sociology, '04 M.Ed. educational administration) is an inspiration and role model.

He fled from oppression in Laos as a child, lived as a refugee in Thailand, and came to America in 1979. He never forgot his escape from injustice.

Phomvisay set his sights on teaching others about America, freedom, and public service. After graduating from Iowa State University, he became one of the youngest teachers in Iowa to become certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in social studies and history.

He previously worked as associate principal at Valley High School in West Des Moines and a teacher of ninth grade world studies and 10th grade U.S. history at Ames High School. He has taught classes at Iowa State, Drake, and in an English Language Learner sheltered classroom.

Leading one of Iowa's most diverse high schools for the fourth year, Phomvisay was named 2014 Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year and was recognized for this accomplishment on the U.S. House floor. He also received the Passport to Prosperity Award from the Iowa International Center.

Phomvisay is currently a Ph.D. student in the ISU School of Education and was awarded the Richard P. Manatt Fellowship last year. He also received the Outstanding Young Professional Award in 2002.

As an educator, leader, and champion of freedom, Phomvisay is yet another example of the 97,000 ISU alumni living in Iowa and contributing to the economic health of the state.
