The recently completed second phase of Iowa State University's Biorenewables Complex will be dedicated tomorrow. The complex which exceeds 173,000 square feet, houses the Biorenewables Research Laboratory (BRL) and Iowa State's top-ranked Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE). The first phase of the project included the BRL, and the second phase added two buildings (Elings Hall and Sukup Hall) to the site and provides a new home for the ABE department. Elings Hall and Sukup Hall provide more than 100,000 square feet of modern research labs, classrooms, student spaces and offices offering a state-of-the-art learning and innovation environment.
The construction of the Biorenewables Complex could not have been accomplished without the commitment and significant financial support of the Iowa General Assembly. The complex builds on the university's goal to be a key resource advancing the state's efforts to become a world leader in the development of biofuels and other products from renewable resources.
Agriculture and biosciences are powerhouses for economic development and jobs, with industries that depend on highly trained graduates. The ABE department is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Engineering, providing abundant resources and talent. Faculty in ABE are nationally and internationally known experts in many fields and have won numerous awards for their leadership in teaching, research, extension and services.
Through innovative research, education and support, the Iowa State ABE program touches lives around the world to provide biorenewable energy, clean air and water, wise management of natural resources and high-tech agriculture and manufacturing.
Did you know? The ABE department at Iowa State University was the first in the nation to grant a degree in Agricultural Engineering, and both undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked 4th in the country (US News & World Report).
