Dr Joanna Macy
Ecophilosopher Joanna Macy, Ph.D., interweaves her scholarship of Buddhism, systems theory, and deep ecology with five decades of activism in the movements of peace, justice and ecology. A world-renowned teacher and author, she created the Work That Reconnects: a groundbreaking framework for personal and social change, embedded in a bold workshop methodology. Joanna Macy's work helps people transform grief, despair and apathy, in the face of overwhelming social and ecological crises, into constructive, collaborative action. The Work That Reconnects brings a new way of seeing the world as our larger living body, freeing us from the assumptions and attitudes that now threaten continuity of life on Earth. "Grief and It's Lifting," Chapter 6
Hiawatha said to himself, "This would I do if I found anyone burdened with grief even as I am. I would console them, for they would be covered with night and wrapped in darkness. I would take these shell strings in my hand and condole with him. The strings would become words and lift away the darkness with which the person is covered. Holding these in my hand, my words would be true." This, the Iroquois say, is the origin of their ritual of condolence, practiced as a way to mourn with and to comfort those in grief, even to the present day.

Greetings!
The longest night of Winter Solstice nears - and completion of the Mayan calendar. Often with this time of little light, we experience the darker emotions. Grief is driving Hiawatha into isolation; but the Great Peacemaker meets him and answers his vision of a Condolence Ceremony. You are INVITED to engage in this ritual - led by Lauren Oliver and Jan Sanders - following Joanna Macy sharing her wisdom on grief and moving back to a life of action. Join us Wednesday 12/5 for rich, deep inner and outer connecting. SEE Circle w Friends below about getting beads & inviting friends.

Joanna's talk on Honoring our Pain for the World connects to Hiawatha's grief and need for condolence from the Peacemaker. Honoring our pain requires space -like Circle- to hear our sorrow, grief, outrage and all feelings revealing themselves in response to the state of our world. This takes us into culturally forbidden territory, taboos that silence our distress. "Negative feedback loops" help us navigate thru life via signals when we are off course, so we can make a course correction: Stray off course -> Notice this -> Respond to get back on course ->. Feedback loops enable all living systems to keep in balance. In Circle, we use feedback in Clearing the Air and Appreciations. Yet a strong current in mainstream culture views gloomy news or feelings as "negative experiences" from which we need to protect ourselves. This can lead to avoidance - a habit that lessens our confidence to cope with emotional distress, and can reflect fear that we'll get stuck in those emotions. Dr. Macy will talk with us about ways to unblock the feedback loops in a safe group where grief can be voiced, heard and valued. BRING YOUR BEADS for the Condolence Ceremony.

Previous Speaker
Starhawk - November 2012
Starhawk spoke to critical circle issues: . Intention: with clear intention, you attract the people you want in your circle. . Power comes in many flavors: Power-over is familiar; Power-within: creativity; Power-with: influence. We earn power in a group by fulfilling responsibilities. . Setting boundaries, you create a framework that protects the group and implements your values. . Constructive critique is intended to improve cooperative work and relationships. The more specific the critique, the more constructive it is, & the more meaningful the praise.

Speak Up and Speak Out
Did you know? In the US, a poor woman is five times more likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy than a higher-income woman.
Did you know? In Uganda, where abortion is illegal under almost all circumstances, abortion rate is more than double that of US.

Circle Forum - Output to ImpactCore to your Intention is the Question The nine participants in Circle Forum shared exciting updates on circles. To note a couple... Marsha's inter-tribal circle is "growing, evolving, and doing community work." They are asking key questions highlighting intentions: "How shall we support each other? How do we get heard? (Run for office.) How to feed the hungry? (Plant seeds, flowers and trees.) They are creating an art center, and doing more drumming. This circle, with members from 15-80 years, is evolving together." And asking great questions! Flo Schell wanted to work on the intention for her gathering. Lorraine Cook gave great feedback: "Key is the question: 'In the spirit of being enough, what might we be if we come together as a circle?'" Circles are making an impact. Join Circle Forum call (click below): an intimate circle experience, with time to deliberate upon your choices for impact. (Dec 19, 3rd Wednesday this month).

Stories from the Field
Starting Our Men's CircleBy Jefferson Parson
"We're just 3 meetings into our men's circle of 6 enthusiastic members. But already at least one principle is emerging as to why our group seems to be off to a good start. All of us are seeking friendship that's experienced regularly, not just when you happen to meet your friend in the store or at the post office. Apparently, this basic need requires commitment, not happenstance. While at some point it may be important t to establish clear intentions for our circle, for now the cohesive factor seems to be the need for supportive companionship. This may be very general, but for us it seems to be the best place to start."

Circle with friends
Invite a friend The Dec 5 Condolence Beads Ceremony is a perfect time to invite folks to circle with you. Get 3-7 beads. Ideally, gather with 3 others (=4). Do the paired exercise face-to-face. Then you have two others to share your stories with in the next part of the ceremony. Hear Joanna Macy together. Join with Jan Sanders and Lauren, to string your beads and share your stories in a powerful gathering.
