Tap into the Fountain of Youth!
A new Gentle Strength and Stretch class begins May 1 at Mid-American Fitness.  This is a great program for "ladies (or gentlemen) of a certain age," those who have never exercised or who are just getting back into exercise.

Stretching and strengthening can help maintain your mobility and reduce the risk of falling as you get older. The instructor teaching this class has advanced training in senior populations and has been teaching fitness classes for over 30 years.

Commemorations this Week
Saturday, April 25

Mark, Evangelist

He was not numbered among the twelve apostles, yet Mark was probably a member of the early church community. The gospel that bears his name is the shortest and most direct, and many scholars think it was the first to be written.

Wednesday, April 29

Catherine of Siena

theologian, died 1380

This theologian was the first woman among Roman Catholics to receive the title "Doctor [teacher] of the Church." Catherine was a Dominican sister known for her mystical visions as well as her work on behalf of people who were poor and imprisoned.

Local businesses have donated more than $1,200 worth of items for our silent auction. Check them out in the narthex, and bid on some great stuff!

Did you know you can make your donation online?  Click here,  select "I want to support a walker," put in the name of the walker you want to support and follow the prompts.  You can put your donation on a credit card or use your PayPal account.

CROP Walk logo

This is our 30th year! The Crop Walk is neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Different ages, faiths and backgrounds - together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting. REMEMBER - 25% of all donations come back to our community. Please WALK or DONATE!!
Thursdays, 8:00 - 9:30 AM
All men of the congregation are welcome to join us for Breakfast, Bible Study and Fellowship every Thursday at 8:00 AM at Eddie's Coney Island on Halstead at Grand River.  We have breakfast and read and discuss the upcoming Sunday Gospel lesson.  We close with prayer for those in need in the congregation and our families. It is also an opportunity to catch up on church activities and muster support for things such as monthly folding and labeling The Voice. Join us!  Bring your Bible, and a friend!
Lay Readers Needed
Readers Needed
We need volunteers to add to the Lay Reader roster. The Lay Reader reads the lessons and sometimes leads the reading of the psalm (when it is not chanted) during Sunday services. If you are interested please contact Marie in the church office at [email protected] or 248-474-0584. The lessons will be sent to you the week prior to your scheduled reading. They are normally emailed but can be mailed to your home. Right now we need readers for dates of 7/12, 7/19, 8/9, and 8/30.

Do you want to get rid of unwanted latex paint and contribute to the success of the ELCA Youth Gathering at same time? It's really simple:

  1. Bring your unwanted latex paint (any color) to St. John. That's It!
  2. St. John volunteers will combine the paint into 5 gallon pails.
  3. The paint will be blessed and taken to the Gathering to be used by the Youth to create safe Neighborhoods through board-ups of vacant Properties.

The last Sunday to bring paint to St. John is Sunday, June 14.

The 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering will take place this summer in DETROIT!  You can help too!  Here's how:

  1. Volunteer!  Click here to sign up.
  2. Help support St. John Youth in their participation.  A list of suggested gifts is here.  You can even give online here.

Are You a Ding-a-Ling?

You just might be a ding-a-ling
if you love to hear bells ring.

You just might be a ding-a-ling
if you wonder what it is like to ring a bell,

You just might be a ding-a-ling
if you like to learn new and challenging things.

Come join JoAnn Adams in the music room alternate Tuesdays at 1:00 pm.  Classes will meet the 1st, 3rd, and 5thTuesdays of each month at 1:00 pm. (These are the opposite Tuesdays of the Prayer Shawl ministry meetings.)  The idea is to learn or re-learn hand bell ringing in a small group setting without the pressure of performance until the entire group is ready to do so. Class size is limited to 6, more than six and we will form another class.

So come join us! See you then!

Life Long Faith Formation: The Holy Trinity

During April, our Life-Long Faith Formation Emphasis has been on the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; one God in three Persons.

The April Sermon Series concludes this Sunday with  "The Shepherd and the Dance."

Our emphasis in May will be on The Bible. We will explore the record of Scripture, and how Christians should regard its authority and guidance.  Watch for more information in next week's eNews.
