Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12: 12

January 8, 2016
Dear North Community Catholic School Families:

Welcome back to school! I hope everyone enjoyed a very blessed Christmas and New Year!  Today second quarter grade cards are coming home with your students.  It is a perfect time to celebrate successes and make some goals for the second part of the school year.

As a faculty, we are always looking for ways to do things better or help our students grow.  We were starting to notice an upturn in classroom and playground behavior incidences as the first semester went on, and it became apparent to us that we needed to try something new to address behavior at all ages.  Our desire is to assign meaningful consequences that help our students grow and cause them to stop and think before they act.  The faculty have created a lunch time detention room that students may be assigned to as a consequence for behavior choices they make.  For our older students who also have the infraction system, this provides the teacher an extra option.  When we do assign infractions, we want them to indicate a behavior or repeated pattern of behavior that carries more weight.  Please know the assignment of lunch detention or infractions is at the teacher's discretion, and there may even be times, such as with more serious or repeated behavior, that a student would receive both.  Please know, that our intention is never to be harsh.  At the same time, this is a learning community where respect, kindness, and love need to be of the highest importance.  We cannot tolerate behavior that does not reflect the virtues we want to be at the heart of our community.  Your support in our attempt to teach the students to be the best version of themselves is absolutely key to our effort!

Winter is here, and please make sure the students come dressed with coats, hats, boots (if it snows!), gloves, etc.  We play outside for recess as long as the wind chill is above 20 degrees.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Peace and Blessings,
Mrs. Beth Strbik
Principal

Blocking, Sam Black, Florence Seiler, Brandon Rehkopf, and Sara Hollstein.  Thanks again everyone, and Happy New Year!

Fish Fries - Service Hour Opportunity
It's time to sign up to support the 2016 Most Blessed Sacrament Fish Fry - each Friday from Feb. 12 through March 18. There are a variety of opportunities available from food prep to serving food to cleaning tables to selling 50/50 tickets. Please visit the online sign-up at www.blessedsacramenttoledo.com to secure your spot today!

Service hours for parent volunteers will be granted for all roles except baking opportunities. Service hours are recorded at the volunteer table in the Kelly Room on the day the service is performed. Please bring your form each time you volunteer. It will be returned to you at the end of your shift. Parents remain responsible for submitting the signed form to school.

Although we encourage you to make this a family event, service hours are for parent hours-worked only. Elementary school students with a parent chaperone may help refill the plates of our guests and clear tables on Fridays. For general safety concerns, we ask that students and/or young children do not accompany you while you volunteer at any of the food or drink stations. Students in need of service hours may help with food prep after school on Thursdays and wash dishes and clear tables on Fridays.

If you are the leader of an organization and can rally a group of seven to 10 people to clear tables for one or all of the Fish Fry dinners or help with clean up/tear down at the end of the evening, please contact Marita Schneider (maritanrick@sbcglobal.net) as soon as possible.

Health Screenings
It's that time of the year where I will begin performing the state mandated health screenings for the students. Students in Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, all new students, and teacher referred students from grades 2, 4, 6, and 8, will be screened for hearing and vision.
If your student doesn't pass the first screen, I will rescreen in 4-6 weeks. If your student does not pass the rescreen, I will send home a referral form for a doctor visit. Once your child has been seen, the doctor's office will send the report to the school to be a part of your child's health records.
Scoliosis screening, for detection of spinal curvature, will be conducted on all students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
If you do not want your child screened, please send a note to school with your child's name, grade, and the screen you are refusing.

Thank you,
Amanda Gillespie, BSN, RN
School Nurse
