NYC's creative class job sector tops L.A., as film and TV production jumps
|
Teresa Novellino, New York Business Journal
If you're a New Yorker and it seems as if you're running into more film and TV shoots on the streets of Brooklyn, discovering more Gotham-based art galleries, and meeting more fashion-tech types based in New York City, it's not your imagination.
A "Creative New York" report released Tuesday from the Center for an Urban Future, a Manhattan-based think tank, revealed that the number of jobs in the city's "creative sector" has jumped over the past decade, even as growth in traditional employment sectors such as law and banking have stagnated.

MMG helps celebrate Flag Day at Gateway National Recreation Area:
National Find Your Voice Initiative Hosts Paddling Event for Veterans and their Families at Jamaica Bay in Gateway
|
The Maslow Media Group celebrated Flag Day on June 14th, by providing a professional still photographer for the National Parks Conservation Association (NCPA) at New York City's National Gateway Park, in Jamaica Bay.
|
As part of NCPA's 'Find Your Voice' campaign, the events were held to show appreciation to the brave men and women who service our country. MMG's New York City based still photographer, Ed Lefkowicz, hiked and canoed thoughout the day to cover events in the park, sponsored by the Sebago Canoe Club and the Wounded Warrior Project.
|
The 'Find Your Voice' events are held to help inspire people to advocate for America's favorite places. Together, people across the country will speak out about critical issues affecting our parks and take action to protect them.

The '1099' question: California ruling says Uber drivers are employees
The Register-Guard
"Sharing economy" startups such as Uber rely on the premise that their services are delivered by people who are not employees -- they're independent contractors. It's a categorical assumption that enables the companies to shift much of their operating costs onto contract workers and operate on thin margins, enhancing their competitiveness in the marketplace.
Uber, for example, requires its drivers to pay out-of-pocket for expenses ranging from insurance to gas to routine car maintenance. In exchange, drivers get access to customers and can operate on flexible schedules that few traditional companies can match.
A recent ruling by the California Labor Commissioner's office threatens to undermine the business model that has become a mainstay of the so-called 1099 economy. (It's called that because the people who provide services such as driving for Uber aren't regarded as employees, so they don't file W-2 tax forms; instead, they file the 1099-MISC, the independent contractor form.)
