Bill Visits TRAP Training, Interviews Australian Drummer
In March Bill traveled to Santa Barbara to speak to attendees of TRAP's training session. TRAP (The Rhythmic Arts Project) is CBC's music-based program of choice in our OH and CA Count Me In projects.
While there, Bill also interviewed Australian drummer Andrew Hewitt, who received a grant to attend the TRAP training session.  Hewitt, called "Australia's most inspiring drummer", was born with cerebral palsy and has been playing drums for over three decades.  He is excited to take the program back to New South Wales following his U.S. visit.
Grant Season Underway
With the help of our "Grants Guru", Becky Antworth of Hired Gun Writing, LLC, we have sent out over 40 new funding requests in the past few months to support our current projects. CBC remains hopeful that these efforts will result in new funding relationships for the coming year.  We'll keep you posted!

CBC YouTube Video of Ed O'Neill goes Viral!
Actor Ed O'Neill, a good friend and supporter of CBC, graciously taped a video for use in promoting our Soul Nite Fundraiser in April.  Within hours of posting on our Facebook page, the video went viral and now has over 15,000 hits!
If you haven't seen it yet, take a few moments to walk down memory lane while Ed reminisces about the music scene in Youngstown in the 60's and 70's.

Developing Relationships
CBC continues to receive inquiries from all over the nation to assist in developing and  placing music-based programs in various locations to benefit children and those with special needs.
We are currently working with principals of agencies located in Denver, CO, Ashville, NC, Santa Clarita, CA and Youngstown, OH to develop new programs that will impact dozens of kids.  We'll keep you updated as these relationships move forward!

Ongoing PR Overhaul
Our work continues with the Clearpoint Agency to develop a stronger and more focused public presence.
Have we mentioned how much we LOVE our friends at Clearpoint?  In addition to helping us improve our ability to understand and articulate who we are and what we do, we have just begun work on a complete website overhaul which we hope to have completed by late summer.  We're sure you'll like the changes.........stay tuned!

CBC Goes to Summer School!
CBC has funded a six-week summer session of TRAP at the Rich Center this June and July.  Samantha Russo returns as instructor twice a week to introduce the TRAP curriculum to several new students and continue working with kids from her previous classes.
This summer school class was made possible by the generosity of those who supported our Soul Nite fundraiser.

Happy Summer everyone!  CBC has had an exciting and groundbreaking spring that we're anxious to tell you about.  Grab a cool beverage and follow along......................

Rich Center
Youngstown, OH
Our first full year at the Rich Center came to a close at the end of spring term classes at YSU. The class was a great success and we've been invited to continue our work there next year, with hopes for including more students.
Samantha Russo Samantha Russo has developed into a wonderful TRAP instructor during her tenure at the Rich Center.  Check out Sam in action in this clip illustrating the TRAP concept of "sequencing".

Many thanks to Sam and everyone at the Rich Center, including teachers/aides, parents, participating students, and administrators Georgia Backus, Renee McConnell and Casey Annico  for their efforts in making this such a great year!
Lanterman High School
Los Angeles, CA
Our second successful year of Count Me In, Lanterman provided continued evidence of student change as a result of participation in the program.  Year Two concluded with a concert given by participating students that was orchestrated by their instructor, Stephen Flinn.  Lanterman students, teachers, parents and staff, along with a number of CBC friends and donors, attended the June 4th showcase.
Lanterman HS 2013 Year End
We've been invited to continue our work at Lanterman High School next year, and hope to expand program offerings.
Many thanks to the Lanterman teachers/aides, parents, and Lanterman HS 2013 participating students along with Christina Cisneros, Lanterman's principal, and Stephen Flinn, our TRAP instructor, for everything they did to make this second year a success!

Our 18-week Contemporary Urban Percussion (CUP) pilot project at Vista Del Mar proved highly popular with both participating students and their instructor.  In late May, the project concluded with two well-received performances given by the CUP students to their parents, Vista students and school administrators.
Check out the year-end performance video.  In this clip, kids who have behavioral and intellectual issues come together when immersed in the CUP exercise!

CBC is thrilled to announce that we have been chosen as the recipient of grant funding from two new sources:  The Crail-Johnson Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley.
The Crail-Johnson Foundation of San Pedro, CA promotes the well being of children in need and advocates for children by acting as an agent for positive change and improvement in the quality of their lives.  These funds will be earmarked to grow our CUP Program at Vista Del Mar for the upcoming school year.
The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley in Youngstown, OH seeks to enhance the quality of life for the residents of the Mahoning Valley and future generations, in accordance with the charitable intentions of its donors.  This grant will be used to grow our Count Me In Program in  Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
We are grateful for this foundation funding and the opportunity to build an ongoing relationship with these agencies for years to come.
Our April 25th "Soul Nite" fundraiser at The Fireplace in Youngstown, OH was a huge success.  The place was FULL of people and everyone had a fun evening singing, dancing, bidding on auction items, and catching up with old friends.  And while one of our primary goals was to produce an event that everyone would enjoy, another was to raise money for CBC.  And that we did!  Thanks to the generosity of those who donated auction items, those who successfully bid on those items, those who purchased tickets at the door and 50/50 tickets during the evening, those who were unable to attend but sent donations, and to a handful of attendees who wrote generous checks to CBC that evening, we grossed almost $10,000 for the event.
We're deeply grateful to everyone who helped make his fundraiser a huge success.  Many thanks go to our DJ, Carl Severino, to Karen & Tom Campana at The Fireplace, who treated us like royalty, and to the host of volunteers who helped us throughout the evening.  We also want to acknowledge Stephanie Sferra of the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau and Donna Falgiani for their special support.
Check out our Soul Nite photo album, complete with captions, at Soul Nite Pics.   Many thanks to our amazing photographer,Joan Minenok Yanchick, for capturing all the fun!

As you can see, we have been extremely busy since our last Newsletter!  The summer months promise to be every bit as hectic as we now turn our attention to securing continued funding from our existing donors.  Like all non-profits, we find ourselves spending more time each year seeking ways and means to support our work.  We are grateful for the new friends we've made in 2013, and, as always, realize that the generosity of folks like you is crucial to our continued growth.  Please help us spread the word and forward this Newsletter to anyone you may know who might be inclined to help us "help music find children".

We wish you and yours a happy, safe and sun-filled summer.  We'll be back to visit you in the fall!
