Dear Colleagues,

Although the academic year for our dental hygiene and dental students begins in the fall, we welcome our dental residents to Ohio State in late June so they can start their programs on July 1st. This year, thirty-six new residents officially began their advanced education yesterday, and how exciting it is!

Our college offers advanced education in seven of the nine ADA-recognized specialty areas: endodontics; oral and maxillofacial pathology; oral and maxillofacial surgery; orthodontics; pediatric dentistry; periodontics; and prosthodontics. We also have accredited training programs in dental anesthesiology and general practice dentistry. Because our residency programs admit different numbers of students, and since each program varies in length, the total number of dental residents we have in the college right now is 85.

Of the new pool of residents, 64% came straight from dental school. For some programs, like our GPR which enrolls 9 residents per year, all are recent graduates. Other new residents have brought with them all sorts of experiences, including time spent in private practice or public health, or years in the military. There are several who have already completed additional training after dental school, such as a GPR or other specialty program.

The group is further distinguished by their geographic diversity. Only 16% are graduates from our dental college. The rest came from 24 different institutions. Several are from dental schools in the Midwest, while others graduated from places like UCLA, U Conn, Oregon, Harvard, and UNC. There are even a few who earned their dental degrees outside the U.S. - India, Greece, and Saudi Arabia. What a mix of places to come from! And what a great opportunity to learn from others!

I feel so fortunate to be at a place like Ohio State that attracts dentists from far and wide to learn more, enhance their clinical skills, and help us care for patients. It says so much about the quality of our residency programs and everything associated with them -- our staff and faculty, our facilities, our own college, and the university. We truly are a worldwide resource for the profession - something for us all to be proud of!
