Dear Colleagues:

I've had a most memorable holiday season and what better way to end it than by leaping into the New Year on the first Thursday of the month. It's the perfect time to think about what the year ahead has in store for us and how we might fully capitalize on all the opportunities that are out there.

I cannot recall having been so optimistic about the future. All around us I see potential to expand our contribution -- to the university, to our community, and to the profession. New leadership on campus, especially in the health sciences, foretell a rethinking of how students are educated, how patients are cared for in a medical center setting, and most importantly, how the health science colleges relate to one another. A change in state and national elected leaders is predicted to cause a refining of how the Affordable Care Act will be implemented in states and across the country. I see these as opportunities for us to help shape the future and to demonstrate our capacity to lead.

Our ability to contribute will be entirely dependent on the quality and dedication of our students, staff, and faculty. How fortunate we have been in our ability to attract such gifted people to work in the College of Dentistry. Students and residents continue to be top performers. Staff hires come from deep pools of applicants. Faculty recruits bring with them specialized training and experiences that add depth and breadth to every division in the college. Ours is an ever-growing talent-rich and hard-working community, willing and able to do what it takes "to make a difference."

I look forward to sharing with you the progress we make this upcoming year. You'll find it all on our newly designed website (dentistry.osu.edu), in the pages of our alumni magazine (The Dental Journal), and in each issue of First Thursday.

Happy New Year!
