Dear Colleagues:

Since early October, I have had four opportunities to welcome candidates for our DDS class of 2019. All told, more than 220 potential students have been invited to our campus for an interview. They were selected from a pool of nearly a thousand applicants from colleges and universities across Ohio, and from states coast to coast.

My responsibility was to let these candidates know what distinguishes our university and college from others they may visit. I told them about the things that make our college one of the best places to receive a dental education in the country. I bragged about the fact that Ohio State is the land-grant university of Ohio and, as such, we are responsible for educating dentists who will care for this state's citizens. I said this gives us a purpose. I described the quality of our faculty and the strengths of our staff. I told them that people come from all parts of Ohio to seek care in our college, and that on an average day we see more than 450 patients. That number equals almost 115,000 patient interactions each year. I also let them know that we have some of the most loyal and supportive alumni in the land.

Of the many things I said to these candidates, one of the statements that meant the most to me was when I acknowledged how good I feel when I meet so many hard-working, bright students who want to join the same profession I chose forty years ago. Their academic records and aptitude test scores are strong, and they have spent significant hours shadowing dentists to ensure they know "what the profession is all about." Each has personally expressed the things that motivated them to consider dentistry as a career and, by any measure, they are an impressive group.

Although fewer than half of the candidates interviewed will receive letters of acceptance from our college, all have demonstrated a level of exceptional achievement and ability that will ensure their acceptance by other dental schools. It is my hope that every candidate, whether they attend our college or another, will have benefited from the time they spent with us.

What a great way to end the year -- knowing that the future of our profession is in good hands. How satisfying and rewarding it is for all of us!

Happy holidays!

College Builds New H.O.M.E. Coach Mobile Dental Clinic

HOME coach

The college recently launched a new, 45-foot mobile dental clinic, known as the H.O.M.E. (Health Outreach Mobile Experience) Coach, that brings dentists and dental treatment to children at Columbus City schools.

The new H.O.M.E. Coach was built with funds that include a gift of $534,000 from the Delta Dental Foundation. A $150,000 grant from the Columbus Foundation and the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation was used to purchase equipment for the mobile dental clinic.

"Oral health is the number one unmet health care need for Ohio's children and at risk populations," said Dr. Canise Bean, community outreach and education director at the College of Dentistry. "The H.O.M.E. Coach program, which was initiated in 2005, helps bridge this gap by providing oral health care and education to underserved children in Columbus and surrounding communities."

Dean Patrick M. Lloyd added, "The H.O.M.E. Coach changes the lives of children, some of whom will receive dental care for the first time in their lives aboard this mobile dental clinic. It also changes the lives of our students, who learn the importance of practicing in underserved communities as they provide treatment to these children under the supervision of our faculty."
