Dear Colleagues:

Our Office of Admissions tried something new and innovative last week! They traveled to Independence, Ohio, to bring together small groups of our college's alumni, dental students, and college students who had been accepted into dental school, as well as other undergraduates who were interested in a dental career. The gathering provided an evening of information sharing, and since this was a new way of bringing so many groups together, we were all excited to see what kinds of interaction would take place.

Everyone had a chance to introduce themselves, starting with our alumni. We learned where each was from and what kind of practice they worked in. The prospective dental students wanted  insights about other students' college experiences and career plans. To provide information about their own professional school experiences, our dental students participated in a panel discussion, answering questions on all sorts of topics that ranged from how to prepare for the DAT examination to the places that dental professionals might practice after graduation.

What a rare opportunity this was for me! I got to visit with four different constituent groups all at one event. And because everyone was somehow connected to that area of the state, I discovered a few colleges I was not aware of, and I heard about some small communities that I did not know existed. I also sensed the strong commitment these young people felt for the places they were from originally or that they lived in now.

But the most impressive moment of the evening for me was when our students spoke about their time in our College of Dentistry and, in particular, about our faculty. Although I had heard this from students at every dental school where I have worked, it was reaffirmed for me and every dentist in the room that "dental school is hard work." As one student put it, "It will be the toughest course work you have ever had." And, as another stated, "If it was easy, anybody could do it."

In reference to our faculty, every student said they are terrific. One complimented our faculty members' willingness to start with the basics in explaining things so that everyone feels comfortable learning at a beginner's level. Another said our faculty are readily accessible for help through office hours and emails. In different ways, they all said our college faculty cared about them and wanted them to succeed.

Given how successful the evening was, I am looking forward to having other opportunities to get connected with groups around the state. I am glad for the chance to learn more about what our alumni are doing, what people want to know about our profession, and what our graduates' plans are for the future. Hopefully, we will make a visit like this soon in your part of the state!

Dr. John Kalmar Quoted in ADA News

The March edition of the American Dental Association's principal publication, the ADA News, featured an article about Oral Cancer Awareness Month, held annually in April. Best practices for early oral cancer diagnoses were suggested in the article that included comments by Dr. John Kalmar, a Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Radiology, and President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Dr. Kalmar was quoted as saying that dental practitioners "can observe Oral Cancer Awareness Month and best serve their patients by recognizing the risk presentations of oral cancer and precancerous lesions." He added that "every [dental] patient deserves to know that such [oral cancer] lesions were among the many possible conditions that were carefully considered by the dentist during each routine comprehensive oral exam."

A Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Dr. Kalmar has also served on the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee for the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and he holds a position on the editorial Board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology and Endodontics.
