Dear Colleagues,

Although I thought about it earlier in the week, it wasn't until

mid-morning that I remembered today -- August 1st -- is my second anniversary at Ohio State. This year, I'm celebrating this milestone as I travel to the annual dental school deans meeting. Spending the bulk of this special day waiting in airports has given me a chance to reflect on the many things that continue to make me feel fortunate about being a member of Ohio State's community. And, as I wait through flight delays and other travel-related issues, I have time at last to write this First Thursday column!

I'm pleased to report, while stranded here at LaGuardia, that my enthusiasm and excitement for our college has not waned. In fact, it has only increased, thanks to a steady stream of good news, great opportunities, and general praise for our college that has been expressed to me by so many throughout this last year.

The positive reports came in just about every week, all year long. Some days, I'd hear a remark that praised our students, staff, or faculty. On other days, there were letters from grateful patients and alumni that came in from all across the country. Many of them just wanted to let me know how proud they were of their alma mater, and each of those notes made my week!

We accomplished so much this past year -- a successful accreditation with just one recommendation, and new and expanded partnerships with Ohio dental companies, the OSU Wexner Medical Center, the James, the Ohio Department of Health and the Ohio Dental Association. All in all, it was a year of getting to know and learn about good people who share our desire to make our profession better so we can provide the best care for our patients, educate the next generation of oral health care providers, and make discoveries that will improve the lives of others.

To all who helped make my second year as dean so invigorating and rewarding, thank you. Here's to another year of memorable moments, extraordinary achievements, and unparalleled success!

D4 Student Nathan Prueter Featured in
ODA Today

Nathen Prueter, a 4th-year dental student, was featured in an article in the July edition of ODA Today.

Commenting on the Ohio Dental Association's support of the OSU chapter of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), Prueter said, "Over the past few years, Ohio State's ASDA chapter has achieved tremendous membership growth and received several prestigious awards...due to many reasons, but in my opinion, one of the vital reasons ASDA has achieved so many of its goals stems from the ideal relationship we have with the Ohio Dental Association."
